You guys have been preparing for this for months now. It's been in the news for weeks now PL was preparing for an offensive and Micheal Keating was even in PL a few days back to deescalate. This was completely PL's doing. As for motivates we can say this was an attempt by Gaas to be popular again among his constituents after having to resort to firing them for supporting the SFG and Farmajo's positions.
