Losing a major war + cancerous socialist policies will do that for a nation. I wonder how Somalia was doing in the 60s

It was destroyed by Soviets and Cubans lol. No army in Africa would capable of beating them. Ethiopia was still destroyed by the SNAThat's just a myth as the military was completely destroyed after 77 war and subsequent rebellion that occurred in late 70s and 80s
*could have been.B-b-b-b-but I thought somalia was the Switzerland of africa, and one of the richest countries in Africa![]()
I'd take a poor but stable nation then the poor unstable one we got now. The barre regime wasn't great but this current clown show is honestly just as worse, no wonder some people feel nostalgic. You look back at old photos and videos and see people going about their lives, living normally.
To clarify I don't like Barre or his regime, the nation would've been better of had he stepped down after the loss during the war of reunification. However he was faaar more competent than the current batch of state and national presidents.
He definitely inherited a stable state but he boosted the military due to his own time and connections in it. As for the people I have no doubt that not everyone was treated well however in our current I'd be hard pressed to say that things are better. All in all it seems we've been trying to recapture the pre Barre era but the damage done has been too great.Siad Barre wasn't more competent, he inherited a functioning state, a strong military, and people were either being patient or being ethnically cleansed.
