You can be shafici and Athari but historically the shafici school was dominated by asharis.
Schools of thought like (shafici,hanbali,hanafi,Maliki) deal with things to do with law whilst schools of theology like (athari and ashari) deal with theological questions.
Historically, scholars had overblown the significance of their differences out of proportion particularly the schools of theology .Nowadays, even they still have those intellectual differences it’s not as heated as it used to be.
Postscript: Athari is sometimes used to refer to the hanbali school of thought since most hanbalis follow athari theological thought
