At a time when local fishermen in Somalia are struggling to compete with foreign vessels that are depleting fishing stocks, the government has granted 31 fishing licenses to China.

Since assuming power last year, this is the first time that Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has given fishing rights to foreigners, news site BBC reports.

Under the new development, the China Overseas Fisheries Association, which represents 150 companies, will be allowed to fish for tuna in Somali waters.

Fishing rights to China , multiple ports for Ethiopia , Qatar and turkey get whatever they want also. It seems farmaajo is selling everything off probably for personal gain.

Giving fishing rights to a nation does not prevent Somalis from fishing.

It means that Chinese are allowed to fish in Somali waters but the Somali government gets a cut of any revenue created as they own the water. Furthermore, they will have to employ Somalis along with Chinese to fish.

Somalis can still fish independently and sell their fish to Somali processing plants, creating double revenue for the nation.

A benefit of this is that Somalia is making money off companies that would usually illicitly fish in our waters. Everyone knew that it was mainly Chinese fishing boats that were fishing in our waters and now the government is making money off them.

I hate to jump the gun but if these deals bear no fruit then he must not get a second term.

certain people on this site like to twist any development Somalia is making into something negative :mjlol:

In a few years the UN will make a report detailing massive reduction in fish stock in Somalia's coast. Farmajo will be living the life in a US mansion. What will we do then?

Agreed lol.

China has 1.5 billion to feed. Shortages are just destined to happen, it's just a matter of when.

Also since there is no regulations, god knows what other bs we could see unfolding.

Why are we such a cursed nation?. This shit just never seems to stop.

He should have encouraged the fishermen to fish more, helped them get ships, sorting facilities and freezers. Allow them to export, and tax them. Even @ 40% tax, he would make more than he's signed with china now.

Somalia's fishing industry is a goldmine, it can generate billions in no time. But axmaarjo waxaad hor keentaba saxiix buu qaban.

Bro said Somalia getting a cut :russ: $1 million out of the $300 million they about to pull out is not a cut :damn:

And no they will not hire Somalis anyone who’s familiar with Chinese people should understand they move in teams they will do all the work on their own. It’s not 1 or 2 chinamen coming but probably at least 100 of them. Every business I’ve ever seen them own in Somaliland they’ve never had a single Somali working for them. Maybe Somalis don’t want to work for chinamen in their own country it’s a pride thing. In fact the only time I’ve seen Somalis and Chinese working together was at a Somali owned vehicle repair garage in Hargeisa where they brought some chinamen to work and live in the compound.

A fishing boat with a permit issued by the breakaway Somali state of Puntland, bearing the Thai name of Chotechai Navy 35, was recently intercepted in Samut Sakhon on suspicion of illegal fishing and human trafficking, police announced on Thursday.”

The crew of 22 Thais and one Cambodian were detained and 500,000 kilograms of fish and other marine life seized.

However, officials found that the boat only had a fishing permit from Puntland and also violated the catch limit of 270,000kg of fish, Jaruwat said.

The use of trawl gear so close to the Somali coastline may have devastating impacts on the environment and also on the Somali people.”
