The urbanities of the South do not represent most of the South who have not deviated much from their nomadic eating habits.And if we're keeping it 100. My father worked as an Engineer in Southern Somalia working on projects in the 70s. They were barely eating fish at the time. Requesting farms to be built along the coastline. Even the ajnaabi Engineers were wondering how misguided/clueless these people were when they could fish. FYI their cuisine wasn't as dexterous or as memorable as you are portraying it to be but keep believing that. The Cadcads (which are the ones doing the laborious cooking) can mostly make pastries. Do you think pastries and baasto are an amazing feat/contribution to the Somali diet? They are not.
Your fathers mistaken. Fish and other seafood has been a staple food for southerners and there many not known (by non southerners) dishes eaten in the south. You don’t have to insult other peoples cultures, it’s unbecoming and frankly silly. Everyone grew up with their favourite dishes and your father is not the end all be all of southern culture la hawla wala quwwata illa billah. The reason why your father worked on these ‘projects’ in the south is the same reason why many in my family did. There was a huge migration of people from Somaliland and Puntland to southern farms and those former famine victims were not interested in fishing and most moved to urban areas as they couldn’t cope. So judging southern culture by Refugees from Somali land is ridiculous to say the least!
You’re okay to eat those same ‘sugar beans’ in a boba drink or any trendy Asian dessert but insult others. Fix yourself hun!
