Somali politics and tribalism

Qof baa yiri

Qabiil ha noolaado
Sanan haba sheegin
Hasoo qaadin cadaalad
Laangaab meeshiisa ha joogo
Haweena daa warkooda
Heybtii tiro leh oo halka degin uun baa talin

Translation

Long live tribalism
Don't mention superstition
Don't utter justice
Laangaab should know his place
Ignore the words of women
The most numerous tribe will rule

These words were uttered by a Somali person who was born, raised, and grew up under discrimination and oppression for the qabiil he was born into. He was held back from his peers by a society that held him in contempt for his qabiil. Denied opportunities his peers had access to and virtually crippled by those he shared a language, culture, religion, and ancestry with. His peers of well-standing qabiils are not smarter or brighter than him, yet he is denied the things they aren't. This is his fate not because he or his father committed any wrong but simply because of superstitions and persisting stereotypes that are so old no one can even verify any truth about them at all. His pleas of justice often go unheard because he has no voice or vote in politics, securing him to his sad fate.

His story, as cruel as it is, is not a unique one and many like him continue to exist this way. It's cruel to ignore them any further. No matter what qabiil they are, we share more in common with them than any foreigners. We have to treat our people better and we can't do that as long as we act in the interests of qabiil.

I've come to realize something, after looking at successful and thriving countries and at our current state, tribalism is simply not compatible with modern societies. It holds us back from the rest of the world. Tribalism holds us back from uniting and equally contributing to our country and people. It is at this time we can't afford to be separated and dispersed. We need to come together and unite to fight against our enemies and to rebuild our country stronger and better for all its people. To that end, we have to abolish tribalism and promote one Somali people.

One love one somali ha noolaato
