From the last resolution extending the mandate of UNSOM they were encouraged to maintain and strengthen their presence. I don't see how they will be leaving anytime soon. The situation is too volatile and there is too much political instability. UNSOM coordinates UN efforts in general it seems and there are so many UN agencies in the country and the government is too weak and fragmented to take all of that on.

It looks like a political stunt.

It also looks like UNSOM works with both FGS and FMS so if there's ever a political fallout the UN can still do it's work. The FGS gets no respect lol. They have to respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Somalia but that doesn't mean the FGS calls all the shots. The president of the UNSC will put this letter straight in the bin where it belongs, Somalia isn't stable yet.

They may stay for the time being. As you say. Our job is to make sure there is a swift transfer of power like in 2022, otherwise like you said, they won’t leave. When Somalia shows results, they listen to us. Like the arms embargo, debt relief, and ATMIS leaving. We have a seat at the UN Security Council currently, Somalia is more prone to securing its demands because of Abukar Osman, who represents us.

Interesting gamble by Hassan sheikh. Mayor of mogadishu has jurisdiction over the UN compound and with the request coming for UNSC, it can’t be declined without reason. Puntland will obviously decline this, not sure if other FMS will. Nonetheless, if this goes through, Hassan has significantly increased his chances of remaining as president post 2027. However if UN declines, he’ll have to do direct election and return to the 2012 constitution.
