Somali concert in MN attended by 6000 people(mostly young people) shows that MN Somalis hold on their dhaqan more than other westerners.

I can’t imagine a Somali concert in London with 90 % of the people attending being under 30. That age demographic doesn’t even listen to Somali music and don’t even care about Somali culture like that. I was surprised to see that in MN such a large concert could be held with 6000 people. That’s huge. It shows that MN Somalis are way more into their culture compared to UK Somalis. Shout out to them.

They are probably the most defining Somalis in the west.

who gives name to our culture. They even call it their “little Mogadishu”

Somalis in the uk are having an Identity issues.

Most of them are Somaliand Decent that gives: clarification on why they don’t want anything to do with that nationality and name. They want to define their own. But don’t know how.

Political conflict between the north and south created this identity issues.

I’m from the north but I see Somalis as all equal.

Somali from the UK mostly identify as Somaliand: I respect their ways but we need to identify with our culture more.

All this is my observation. Don’t take it as a higher consideration.

Minnesota seems lit, they celebrate the somali independence in style, heard they have a whole parade.

@World

Relax bro, from what I have seen, there is huge rise in genuine interest in somali culture. For example, more somali kids have started to listen to somali music and that increases when they get older.

Also I don’t think UK has the same facilities to make such large scale things such as USA. Also the US is much more cheaper, which is a huge factor.

In the coming years, expect more somali diaspora kids to get interested in their culture. For all the faults tiktok has, one positive thing it has done is spreading somali history and cultural content. Many kids know about Ajuraan and Adal empires etc. There will be bigger celebrations in the coming years.

There are just as many Somalis in London as in Minnesota/Minneapolis if not more. Yet suldaan seerar couldn’t sell out out in his London show which had only 3000 capacity yet I’m hearing he almost sold out target centre which has 20,000 capacity. Obviously this just means that Somalis in the uk don’t care much about somali music compared to minnesota.

Counter point: Somalis only started to show an interest & appreciation for Somali music when ajanabis on TikTok gave Somali artists a shout out. :axvmm9o:

Do you know there are nearly same number of UK Somalis as there are Swedish Somalis ? put that into perspective before downing UK Somalis, the Somalis in Sweden are total waste.

But I agree big up the US malis.

@K-M-O spot on most of them like to refer themselves as "landers" they don't want to have any association with the name "somali" London is a very multicultural society so we fit in with other Muslims and forget our roots even if we hang out with other somalis there will always be a group that's not from somalia and the other from Somaliland so no unity. Also I noticed in London somali boys and girls tend to have this weird friction between each other so I can't envision there being a huge somali party and the atmosphere being very awkward. Minnesota population is small and somalis aren't really around other demigprahic apart from cadaans and themselves

I aint gone to judge until I see the ticket prices. Also Suldaan Seerar concert in the Uk if Im correct was not held in the summer and especially not on the day of the indepence that gives a nice boost. I applaud MN for being strong in somalinimo. Give Uk some time, its just starting.

Hmm, its complicated. There was certainly a growing appreciation of Somali music in diaspora kids, most know Suldaan Seerar and couple other fanaans. I can’t lie tho, Nimco Happy going viral boosted interest in somali music but Im certain that diaspora yutes would have started to get more interested even without the ajanabi appreciation.

No English speaking diasporas care about Sweden
We don't only speak english but Somali as well, and we have relatives in many places across the globe, its good to tell each other the lay of the land. The country that Somalis have highest population by ratio is Sweden, almost 100,000 out of the 10 mill population. Compare that to Somali in UK same population 100,000 but in a sea of 80mil people. In Sweden the only ethnic group that is larger than Somali is the Arabs if you can consider them that since they are from many different countries.

I do consider myself pro-fun and all but there's something disturbing about people celebrating somalinimo at a time like this. The least you could do is make sure all proceeds are donated towards victims of drought.

Several factors as to why Somali Music was attended by a lot of youths in Minnesota.

1. Minnesota has a lot of recent arrivals from Qabridayax refugee camp (mainly natives of Ethiopian occupied Western Somalis). Sereer is Ogaden.

2. It is suspected that Ogaden has surpassed MJs in Minnesota

3. The timing was brilliant (independence weekend for both Somalis and America )

4. Somali music has gotten way better specially the rap game. SHARMAboy got real hard rapping lyrics with a matching beats. They’ve learned from the Afro beats.
