Siad Barre's massacre of Muslims in 1989

In July 1989 Mogadishu's catholic bishop (for Siad allowe the catholic mission to continue in Somalia despite kicking out Al Azhar) was gunned down by an unknown assailant in response the Siad Barre government arrested many Well known shuyukh. The most prominent of these Shuyukh was the world reknowned Qari Abdirashid Ali Sufi and Ibrahim Suuley (Father of the ICU's spokesman Maxamuud Ibrahim Suuley. Both were members of the Tablighi Jamaat and the furthest thing from rabblerouser or agitators. When the Somali people protested this massive injustice outside Ali Sufi mosque the regime killed 450 Somali Muslims for a single gaal.

Many mention Siad's murder of 10 wadaads in 1975 as proof of his war against Allah. his messenger, and the muslim faith but in my view July 1989 is any even more damning evidence

Good thing by persecuting and killing random Muslims? You are also slandering the dead scholars that were killed for criticizing the government moving away from the religion.

This was a lie from Siad himself. They were rightfully protesting the secular family law that went against the Quran. That is why they were killed, not some weird conspiracy.

Abdirashid Shermake and his civilian government that ruled Somalia between 1960-1969 included prominent Christians such as Clement Salool, Michael Mariano, Anthony James the finance minister, Haji Ibrahim Egal mother in law ( Edna Aden’s mother) was also a Christian

The CIA attest to the fact that members of the civilian government between 1960 and 1969 converted to Christianity.

The Somali Youth League (SYL) government, on the eve of its historic independence in 1960, extended an invitation to Israel to attend the 1st of July celebrations. the architect behind the invitation was Abdullahi Isse

The invitation however, did not go unnoticed. Arab states such as Egypt were quick to express their displeasure at the SYL government and described them as Colonial puppets of Italy

Gamal Abdel Nasser a dominant figure in the Arab world, demanded that Isse rescind the invitation, viewing it as a betrayal of the Muslim cause.

Yet, despite mounting pressure and the looming shadow of Muslim discontent, Isse remained resolute. On the 24th of May, Isse defied expectations and affirmed Israel's participation in Somalia’s Independence Day celebrations.

However, tensions arose in 1962 when newly converted Somali Christians began distributing Christian pamphlets in Mogadishu. In response, the civilian government ordered the Mennonite mission to halt its activities.

The situation escalated further with the murder of Merlin Grove, director of the Mennonite missionary, was stabbed to death while registering Somalis for educational classes.

His death prompted the government to reconsider its stance, leading to the lifting of the ban on Christian missionary work after pressure from the Merlin Grove family.

In the 1960s, the civilian government revealed plans to impose the Latin script as the official writing system for the nation, sparking outrage across the country.

Religious leaders and the public took to the streets in protest, waving banners that read, "We don't want Latin." In response, President Aden Adde not only ignored the will of the people but also ruthlessly cracked down on dissent, ordering the arrest of protesters and respected religious figures alike.

In 1962, the civilian government officially adopted the Latin script as the nation’s writing system. By 1966, the Sudan Interior Mission (Christian mission ) had utilized this newly selected writing script to translate both the old and new Testaments of the Bible into Somali.

The SRC and Islam

The Somali Revolutionary council recognised that Islam forms as an integral and foundational core of Somali society.

The regime of Siad Barre presented itself as a guardian and promoter of Islam, emphasizing the protection and rejuvenation of the faith rather than its erosion. It sought to advance religious education and develop religious infrastructure.

The constitution of the Somali Democratic Republic (SDR) explicitly declared Islam as the state religion

a clear distinction from secular governance, where no official religion is recognized.

This constitutional stance strengthens the case that Barre's government was genuinely pro Islam, utilising Islamic religious identity as a foundation for national unity and governance rather than furthering a secular agenda that further divides the Somali people

The Somali Revolutionary council state the following:

“𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘪 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦'𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮, 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. CIA declassified documents confirm that Siad Barre’s government actively integrated religious leaders into the political framework.

Several prominent Muslim religious figures were appointed to high-ranking civil service positions as part of an effort to co-opt Islamic leadership.

The CIA state the following:

Siad Barre stated that Islam was a divine source of justice for humanity, reaffirming that no one but Allah has the authority to alter the religion.

This stance contradicts with the narrative often associated with him today, which paints him as antagonistic toward Islam.

In contrast, some of his Arab counterparts, like Muammar Gaddafi, took blasphemous stances on Islamic doctrine.

Gaddafi, for instance, suggested removing the word “Qul” (say) from the Quran and publicly mocked the hijab, calling it a creation of Satan.

Gaddafi later supported anti-Siad rebel groups, such as the SSDF, co-founded by Ayaan Hirsi’s father

The Mennonite Mission under the Somali Democratic Republic ( SDR )

In 1972, three years into Siad Barre’s military regime, the Supreme Revolutionary Council nationalized all private schools which was mostly ran by Christian missionaries, the SRC also seized control of the mission’s medical programs.

In 1973, Robert Dale Bulkwalter, an American missionary, was detained and reportedly tortured by the NSS after sustaining eye injuries

Robert Dale Bulkwalter was accused of subversive activities in Jowhar. He was expelled from the country shortly thereafter.

By May 1976 the last remaining missionaries were informed that their contracts had been terminated. They were given orders to leave Somalia immediately, marking the end of the Mennonite mission’s presence in the country.

Unveiling the Truth: Debunking the Myth of Siad Barre’s Hijab Ban

Many claim that Siad Barre banned the hijab, but there is no documented government policy to support this assertion.

Historically, the Somali people placed little emphasis on modesty or the hijab. In 1830, Abdirahman Ali Al Majerteeni introduced Islamic reforms, including the adoption of Islamic dress for women. However, these changes were met with strong opposition, particularly from the Sultan of Geledi, who led a force of 40,000 men to sack Somali towns in resistance to the reforms.

British explorers during the 19th century even made note that Somali women usually do not cover up or wear the veil.

The CIA even attests to the fact the Somali women do not face the same religious obligations such as wearing the Hijab, the CIA noted that even after marriage Somali women do not wear the veil.

People who were protesting in a masjid knowing full well there would be backlash from the government. They made their bed they can sleep in it. I'm not feeling bad for them or condemning anything. This wasn't people who were praying salad and randomly shot they were trying to case a disturbance and attempted to ignite a riot against the goverment.

Theres no way you condone the killings of hundreds of people which included children and the elderly just because they rightfully rioted against the regimes previous decisions. There are far more safer ways to deal with riots that doesn’t include shooting the protesters with live bullets. People that condone the killings of unarmed muslims outside of a masjid are disgusting. No wonder the Kacaan were deposed.

I never said I condone the alleged killings i said i dont sympathize with people who go out of their way to protest against a authoritarian government knowing full well the consequences of what would befall them. In the words of Jaale Maxamed Siyaad Barre AUN, "Xukun jilicsan iyo gus jilicsan midna kheyre ma leh". MSB made a controversial decision by arresting several sheikhs without any clear reason which led to public protests demanding answers (and rightfully so).

The kacaan’s response to the protests however was too excessive. Rather then de-escalating the protests through lawful means they resorted to firing live rounds at the protesters. This was one of many incidents that eventually led to the founding of the USC. The kacaan during its last years turned into an oppressive regime and was rightfully ousted.

The prophet (saw) encouraged us to stand up against oppressive rulers who commit injustice and therefore the Ali Sufi masjid massacre (in which many children and elders lost their lives) was entirely unjustified and MSB bears full responsibility for this grave wrongdoing.

Evidence for the Hadith in question:

أَفْضَلُ الْجِهَادِ كَلِمَةُ عَدْلٍ عِنْدَ سُلْطَانٍ جَائِرٍ

“The best form of jihad is a word of justice in the presence of a tyrannical ruler.” {Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2174}

This shows that those who were killed for protesting and demanding justice from the tyrannical kacaan regime can be considered to have died in a form of jihad and may be regarded as shaheeds.
