Should Sex Education and Abstinence Be Taught at Schools in Somalia?

I am not sure if you guys know this but there is a growing epidemic of Somali girls getting pregnant both in the diaspora and back home as well, a young female getting pregnant before marriage is a huge taboo in our culture, this unorthodox pregnancy forces the young girl to hide this from her family and eventually discard the new born baby, I have seen it with my own eyes.

These young girls don't know much about sex and usually have no idea how to deal with the situation, plenty of Muslim countries teach Sex Ed in schools, countries like Pakistan and Malaysia are a prime example.

Personally, I think it's important to teach our kids about safety. You really can't expect teenagers to just not do it because they didn't learn about sex in some classroom. it's a natural desire, so I think it's important to teach kids about the consequences of sex, how to protect themselves against the undesirable outcomes (pregnancy, STD, etc...), AND why abstinence is their only option to completely avoid those outcomes.

Abstinence is important to learn about, but I agree with this article that it is dangerous to not teach about sex and what to expect. Curiosity about sex is not an easy thing for kids to ignore nor resist, and they will be more inclined to find out for themselves unless they are armed with knowledge about what they are about to get in to.

What do you think about teaching abstinence-only verses a comprehensive sex education?:farmajoyaab:

Tbh I think all countries should
For example
I am 15,which is old enough to get married back home, and I didn’t know a single thing about sex Ed since I grew up in a Muslim country
And when u made a thread about how to make a women feel orgasm or whatever
That was really my first time hearing about it
and I learned something that I wouldn’t have probably ever know
So I think there should be sex ed in all schools in every country in the world
Although idk if its Islamic

Didn't they teach you these as part of biology lessons? We did Sex Ed from primary school onwards.

Islam is the mother of knowledge.
All this dark-age hiding and ignorance is not from Islam but from closed-minded and backwards cultures

Remember 14 years of my life were in the UAE

That's quite strange for them to not teach it at all even from an Islamic perspective. Our dugsi macaalin even spoke to us about this. Try to find islamic books on this and some biology books to understand both perspectives.

Sex ed is useless imo. People are gonna do whatever the f*ck they want if they horny and sex ed ain’t gonna stop that.

Sex Ed is not about sex only and definitely not useless, schools have to teach them the methods of protection and prevention. More importantly, also teach them to value their bodies and try to make them see how it can become both a beautiful experience and a horrible one.

Most Kids are ignorant on this matter since Somali parents don't discuss this with their offsprings, they need to know that their body is the most valuable of gifts not to be given to unworthy strangers. Because after all, when you lay with a person, it can truely change your life forever. It could be good or bad... or both... or even a blessing in disguise.

Its also important to teach them about self worth along with both sex ed and abstinence and then leave the choice up to the kids, this is the best way to allow them to choose "the correct" path and not blame our community for setting up to get knocked up.

That still won’t stop most people from having sex. Look at the amount of people here in the west who engage in pre-marital sex, birth kids out of wedlock and STDs.

If anyone should be teaching kids about sex, it’s the parents. U can’t trust bunch of strangers to teach your kids about sex.

Your whole reasoning for sex education is about because of Zina. And I quote: β€œ You can’t expect teenagers not to do it” and also β€œit’s a natural desire”.

You can’t just say, teach the teens about sex education because it’s an inevitability that’ll they’ll commit Zina. That’s a very irresponsible approach. You’re basically normalising a great sin

Sex Ed is on the parents not the school system;
Ignorant or backward parents will bare the ill results of their backwardness.
Ignoring something is not dealing with it
and to think to save a child’s innocence by not equipping them with their own biology is dangerous, especially in a society that is so sexually perverse. Plus puberty is when you’re good and bad deeds start to count, if your old enough to have sexual desires you are old enough to be educated about it. That being said Sex Ed for under 10s is inappropriate and the parent should be an active parent in helping to protect their children from sexual abuse hence why they are the parent.

I think the parents should teach the kids and imams should have sermons where they talk about this topic they shouldn't be ashamed

Its encouraged in islam to please your spouse, make yourself look good and smell good
