The irony in this statement is that camels came to Somalis through foreign contact. Our word for camel is from
Old South Arabian:
They came to us from Arabia where they were domesticated. The original Cushitic livestock package was cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys and shepherd dogs. And Cushites were always grain-collectors even before they began to develop local forms of agriculture like the
Durra & Teff complexes which would mean some amount of bread production was around since the Neolithic in Sudan (over 5,000 years ago). We are descended from some of the earliest Neolithic people in the Middle-East, walaal. Though from studying stable isotopic data on some early Cushites from places like Kenya it seems apparent they ate mainly meat and dairy products despite this based on their trophic level:
Behavioural modifications associated with the exploitation of new food resources have been linked to major steps in hominid evolution and in subsequent human cultural development1,2. Testing of specific hypotheses concerning the influence of dietary change on these processes would be facilitated...

Early Cushites did also practice some amount of hunting game though as time went on it seems hunters got solidified into their own ostracized caste like the Madhiban. The coastal fishermen and seafarers also did consume a lot of seafood and those types were around for at least the last 1,000-2,000 years while Somali nomads have been documented to have seasonally consumed wild and cultivated fruits (like dates) and raw, wild honey:
Ajanabis mainly introduced things like rice, pasta, plant oils, poultry and modern processed foods. Meat, dairy, fruits, honey, a little bread & other agricultural products like sesame seeds along with some amount of fish along the coast despite the
Cushitic fish taboo are all pretty native. Though a case can be made for Somali fishing and seafaring culture being due to foreign influence from Indians and Arabs but fish taboo or not, it's not like Cushites did not eat fish at some point in the last several thousand years and like we're not descended from various HG cultures who consumed all sorts of wild game, fish and a few things like tubers and fruits when they could be found.
