The Congo seems to be a punching bag for all the countries in that region. They got cursed with their position and resources.
Genetically they can be modeled as like 70-75% Somali-like. They're basically 3/4 Horner by blood and are descended from the Ancient South Cushites who still linguistically survive in people like the Iraqw.
But they have been linguistically Bantu-ized despite being historically cattle pastoralists like the ancient Cushites and assuming a culturally dominant position among the Bantus. These saaxiibs would be ruling the Congo today if it wasn't for constant cadaan interventionism.
rwanda has a population of 13 million and Congo has 95 million. Rwanda is 89 times smaller than the DRC.

Broadly, the Kivu conflicts always put herders in the plateau, Chief among them the Banyamulenge, against lowland farmers. Kivu is unique among Congolese provinces for having this dynamic, since others haven’t experienced recent-ish pastoral migration.
The Kivu conflicts have been ongoing since decolonization and arguably before, but we’re always low level except in the 1990s. What allowed them to explode in that decade was the US permitting Rwanda to invade Congo. 1/3 of regional budgets are foreign aid, so to conduct any aggressive act, a sub-Saharan state needs the permission of a major donor, and only the US and China qualify as that today due to the decline of Europe and especially Russia. Neither Washington nor Beijing is going to green light a third Rwandan intervention because they saw how the last one went, and both their economies are dependent on the smooth flow of Congolese minerals, especially coltan. In the 1990s, the situation was only allowed to get so out of hand because the Clinton administration, seeing the Mobutu regime as an autocratic dinosaur akin to modern Saudi Arabia, got it in their heads that he could be deposed with ease. The coalition that deposed him then fractured, which triggered a bizarre proxy war between the US and France of all countries who supported opposite sides.
These conflicts continue to flare up today because both ethnic categories in Kivu are armed and they keep coming at each other. There’s only one route to peace which is a permanent settlement between the two of them, mostly around grazing rights, but the problem is also not going to blow up into a wider Congolese civil war like in the 90s so nobody feels any urgency to solve it.

Most of everything from Sudan to Chad down to Mozambique would likely be ours today and even some of Yemen but then the Semites and Bantus came with their iron-age technology and only the Cushites in Sudan and the Horn really held out and managed to technologically advance in time to not to be subsumed. Probably also helped that a lot of our lands like in Somaliweyn and northeast Sudan were very arid and not as attractive for settling or just generally difficult to overrun like that. To be fair, a huge chunk of northern Ethiopia was still central Cushitic just 200-500 years ago.

To be fair, you can still model most Xabashis as like 3/4 "Somali" . And a chunk of that 1/4 is Omotic and not just Semitic admixture. Their material culture and customs were also historically WAY more in line with ours than with any Jazeerans, even despite Christianity. The Semites who language shifted them were clearly just a minority who managed to dominate for a short time. The Agaws vastly outnumbered them.
