Well first of all humans get stressed under duress but rather than flee he chose to stand his ground and fight. Would say he was courageous. Definition of courage is not the absence of fear but fighting despite being scared shitless

He was so scared to hurt the guy that he was holding all of his punches, which you never do in a fight. It is get dropped or drop them first.
