This reddit thread has basically surmised my whole opinion on Siad barre. It’s shocking especially on tiktok when you see avid supporters of Siad barre.

They say he was a Wadani how can someone be a wadani when he murdered hundred thousands of innocent civilians.

Just because he did a couple great things for Somalia doesn’t excuse genocide.

Until we sit down and say during the civil war we all committed genocide and these war criminals put to justice we will never heal.

We need to build war memorial across the nation to remind us somalis never again.

Everything that he did in the first couple of years is utterly erased by the crimes of the latter years. There was clannism in Somali politics before him, but back then it manifested itself in the form of one-upping each-other through governmental positions, elections, and nepotism, it was something we could eventually elevate from like the Japanese with greater economic prosperity. However, he eventually introduced a conventional and regional military element to clannism when he involved the Somali Armed Forces (an institution respected by everyone in the Nation at the time) and turned on his own people.

When you break the trust and social contract between a brotherly people, the rift created will be greater than the one between two enemies.

Yeah only a fool would say he did any good in the beginning of his dictatorship but whats the point of raising the literacy rate if your going to plunge your country into a 30 year civil war and the literacy rate drop world wide.

Long story short, you can blame the Khawarji and their poison for 30 years of civil war and the disintegration of a unified nation. Rebellion never makes a situation better but 1000x worse, which is why the Prophet condemned it, and it is also a technique used by Yahud and the West to split and conquer.

I don't harbor any personal admiration for Siad Barre, nor do I have any vested interest in his legacy. However, when assessing our situation in light of the removal of Siad Barre and the subsequent plotting of the rebels, the question arises: did our circumstances truly improve?

This is might be a spicy take but siad barre did far worse than any colonial country did to us.

The result of his war:

• Plunge a economy which had great potential into one of the poorest nations in the world.
• Genocide many clans and created a level of distrust amongst somalis that was never previously achieved.
• Made us the poster child of failed nations
• Made the nobel somalis into crime associated refugees.

Siad Barre told a Christian Political Cult that he would worship Jesus if he was given weapons to wipe out 'rebels'. This was mentioned in a Netflix documentary about a powerful political group called 'The Family'. The man's legacy is pure evil and the only people that love him, are his tribesmen and people who lack empathy for others.

Siad Barre's legacy is shameful and his coup was the beginning of the end.

I go easy the parents and grandparents generation for their love of him. They conflate their youth and the peace they had with a single man rather than Somalis working together as a whole. However I think the current youth that idolize him are foolish. He was a bad man and had he died early in his reign then it would've been better for us all. Unfortunately he didn't and he went onto cause the greatest rift of our time.

Northern unionist are my brothers and sisters in arms, I applaud them for choosing unionism when successionist ideas are everywhere. I feel like we can build bridges if we let go of this foolish nostalgia for warlords and dictators, call them all monsters and put them all on trial.
