I am from a liberal city within a racist state. I do get looks from time to time but my attire sometimes shows professionalism (i.e. Button-down shirt with khakis)

I'm in NC; I never had a racist moment. I think that may only happen if you stick out too much, for instance, if you cant articulate yourself well in a social environment. However, if you have a heavy accent, you are done for.
