The time has come and my mission is Finally complete after trying to find a thread on here about a complexion known as "Maarin" I can finally summarise the exact meaning of Abyad/Azhar which is literally the exact meaning and description of a complexion as what Somalis call "Maarin" And a colour used quite often in ancient Egyptian depictions. I don't have to waste my time now and close my case with this Final thread on this topic. This complexion was a minority complexion, just like how Somali people have this complexion. However, it is not the average or norm. Prophet's grandfather, Abul Mutallib, was Adam-complexioned, meaning dark brown. His ten sons were described as dark as the night in one narration, and in another hadith, while circulating the Kaaba, they were likened to black camels due to their blackness and size.
In Classical Arabic there are several distinct ‘shades of blackness’ as noted by al-Tha‘labīb in his Fiqh al-lugha [82-82] Abyad/bayad is a particular shade or ‘type’ of blackness. According to the important Syrian hadith scholar and historian of Islam, Shāms al-Dīn al-Dhahabī in his Siyar a’lām al-nubalā’ [II:168]:
“When Arabs say, ‘so-and-so is white (abyad),’ they mean a golden brown complexion with a black appearance.”
Al-Dhahbi wrote:
إِنَّ العَرَبَ إِذَا قَالَتْ: فُلاَنٌ أَبْيَضُ، فَإِنَّهُمْ يُرِيْدُوْنَ الحِنْطِيَّ اللَّوْنِ بِحِلْيَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ، فَإِنْ كَانَ فِي لَوْنِ أَهْلِ الهِنْدِ، قَالُوا: أَسْمَرُ، وَآدَمُ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي سَوَادِ التِّكْرُوْرِ، قَالُوا: أَسْوَدُ وَكَذَا كُلُّ مَنْ غَلَبَ عَلَيْهِ السَّوَادُ، قَالُوا: أَسْوَدُ أَوْ شَدِيْدُ الأُدْمَةِ
“When Arabs say; So and so is ‘abyad’, they mean a wheatish complexion with slight darkness (hintiy al-lawn bi-hilyatin sawda)."
