Somalis should have built qanats as well, that would have been far more reliable than small dams/catchments as the water wouldn’t be lost to evaporation. Especially the ones around northern sanaag, which would have ample water resources from the mountains.

Shame this technology did not spread there.

True, I think with proper excavations we’ll learn more about their way of life.

I’ve travelled some of these regions as a teenager and I always thought it was post civil war structures that I saw but came to find out years later that it was actually ruined Islamic towns and other settlements dating back 900-1000 years.

Some of the settlements are probably older than 1000 years as in the case with Aw Barkhadle and Firdowsa near Sheikh town.
