These actual problems exist all over the world and africa. Depaite the fact there’s is a law now changing that ppl are still using somalia/somalis as a punching bag calling us protecting pedos and rapists etc when the government is literally doing something to combat this
how can you not see the cognitive dissonance vileness and racism ?
This is true , pedophilia and rape are global problems, not something unique to Somalia. The difference is that Somalia’s local governments are actually taking concrete steps to combat it. They’ve rolled out DNA forensics, strengthened legal mechanisms, and groups like the Female Lawyers Associations have been pushing for access to justice, policy influence, and harsher sentences.
For example, Puntland now has a higher conviction rate than even the UK on such crimes , around 54%, compared to just 27% a few years ago which was already an improvement from 14-12% a few years before that , thanks to reforms and forensic tools that reduced cases being dismissed for lack of evidence (down to 21% in 2017) .
If you commit molestation or rape, the authorities will literally hunt you down across borders, as we saw recently reported on Hiraan with that one guy who fled.
The real gaps are mostly in rural and remote areas where state enforcement is weaker and communities often try to mediate such matters. But in towns and populated areas, the legal mechanisms are much stronger. This will change over time.
As for child or forced marriages, that’s largely concentrated in extremely poor communities and displacement camps out of sheer desperation , it’s not the general reality for most girls in Somalia.
Of course, more improvements are needed, which is why I don’t mind the outrage on social media. As I’ve said before, Somalis being vocally against it often pushes the government to act faster and tougher. And honestly, that’s better than what happens in many other African countries, where the problem is worse but swept under the rug. They focus on PR; Somalis are actually forcing real reforms.
