"Somali" was first mentioned in a Abyssinian manuscript dating to the 14 century about a victorious battle between the Abyssinian Empire and Ifat Sultanate in which the Abyssinians gained new territory.

that was the first time it was written doesn't mean we were named by them. somalis were oral society
So none of the kingdoms decided to write what they encountered, wars, possible origin? So your saying that our history is being told to us by foreigners since we were an oral society?

Somalis were referred to only by their clans for much of the middle ages. Even before the first mention of the word Somali there were references to our clans.

Somali derives from the name of Chinese Ming dynasty general Song Ma-li.

He arrived in East Africa in the middle ages, bust a nut in a bantu woman. This created the ethnic group known as Somali.

Somali is just a particular Somali pronunciation of Samaale, the forefather of Somali people. Somalis tend morph the pronunciation of some As in other languages to Os in our language, Ps to Bs, Ms to Ns, etc. (Pasta to basto and fatma/fatima to fadumo).

Also half of the Galla/Oromo (the Boranas who number in the millions in Ethiopia and northern Kenya) also claim Samaale as their forefather.

"Galla", was also a name given by Habesha to Oromos. I have a feeling Somalis were so used to being called Somal by Habeshas that they kept it. :mjlol:
The Abyssinians did, during the Adal Invasion.

Before that we were called Berberawi (Berber look-alikes)
Somalis were referred to by Hararis, as "Simur", would Somalis pick a Habesha's word over an allied Harari's word? Keep in mind they were very close.
