Omar Fateh running for Mayor of Minneapolis

Kenyans and South Africans going crazy in the comments @Idilinaa
They’re really recycling that Captain Phillips caricature non-stop, and honestly, it feels like they’re just copying the same stuff they saw MAGA trolls post.

It’s not surprising though a lot of the same energy you see from those folks is exactly like the complaints you hear in Kenya, where some people get mad when Somalis hold top positions in government. And when they’re told it’s because those Somalis are actually ''qualified'', they still can’t accept it.

These people can’t seem to look past someone’s ethnicity, nationality, or religion to recognize them as part of society contributing just like anyone else. It’s rooted in insecurity, plain and simple.

That’s exactly why Somalis should just tune out the noise and keep focusing on building themselves up. Let the results speak.

Tbh alot of it is mostly from bots and rightwing grifters

There are actually quite a few Nigerians elected in places like the D.C. area and many with clearly African names:

Eight Nigerian Americans elected to top political positions in US

So let’s not act like Somalis are the only ones doing this. We’re just more visible in certain cities like Minneapolis.

Honestly, blaming Somalis for being active in society is just deflection. We’re out here doing what every other immigrant group does working, building, giving back, and yes, getting involved where it matters.

It’s not really about what we say or do , it’s what we represent to some people. Being Muslim and proud of our identity plays a big role in why we get targeted online by those weird right wing incel types.

And it’s not just politics or business either Somalis are working in public service too, even in top roles:

CEO of the Minnesota Housing Authority

Director on the Minnesota Hospital Board

So no, it’s not about “targeting” politics we’re just active and engaged. That’s what communities are supposed to do.
Yes, but are they actual refugees like Ilhan Omar or Ahmed Hussen? Are they actually in the United States Congress? There are levels to this.

Being a refugee isn’t why they invent wild conspiracies about Ilhan Omar being a terrorist or pushing sharia law , that comes from Islamophobia and xenophobia, not her refugee status.

You can look at the backlash Zohran Mamdani recieved even, they even created conspiracy that he is championing global jihad.

Also, yes , those Nigerian Americans were elected to the House of Representatives. That’s Congress.

You don’t know much about American politics Democrats double down on immigration/identity politics and they can forget about winning an election until 2036

The electoral college heavily favors republicans and whites control the suburbs and are buying up the inner cities

It’s actually the Republican Party that constantly fixates on identity politics and immigration. Just look at their rhetoric it’s always centered on attacking someone’s background, religion, or nationality.

Take Omar Fateh for example. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, and his platform is all about economic and development policy. But the replies he gets are almost entirely about him being Somali, Black, or Muslim none of which come from Democrats. It’s the Republican base driving that.

And it’s ironic how much outrage they express over undocumented immigration, when it’s often Republican aligned business owners and Republican state who rely on that very labor to cut costs.

The same goes for Trump himself he’s supported expanding H-2 and H-1B visas and has hired plenty of foreign workers for his businesses. They don’t want to train, educate or invest in American workers; they just want cheaper labor and someone to blame/scapegoat to deflect from it.

The only reason maga got elected was because of growing fears of mass immigration. To be elected, you have to have a narrative you can use to ur advantage. People are waking up about jews, AIPAC and the zionist lobby and Democrats are more pro palestinian then their republican counterparts. If they are smart, they use this narrative and people like Mamdani to push their cause
