So let’s not act like Somalis are the only ones doing this. We’re just more visible in certain cities like Minneapolis.

Honestly, blaming Somalis for being active in society is just deflection. We’re out here doing what every other immigrant group does working, building, giving back, and yes, getting involved where it matters.

It’s actually the Republican Party that constantly fixates on identity politics and immigration. Just look at their rhetoric it’s always centered on attacking someone’s background, religion, or nationality.

Take Omar Fateh for example. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, and his platform is all about economic and development policy. But the replies he gets are almost entirely about him being Somali, Black, or Muslim none of which come from Democrats. It’s the Republican base driving that.

And it’s ironic how much outrage they express over undocumented immigration, when it’s often Republican aligned business owners and Republican state who rely on that very labor to cut costs.

The same goes for Trump himself he’s supported expanding H-2 and H-1B visas and has hired plenty of foreign workers for his businesses. They don’t want to train, educate or invest in American workers; they just want cheaper labor and someone to blame/scapegoat to deflect from it.

I don’t think immigration was the only reason people voted for Trump. A huge part of it had to do with rising food prices, rent, and overall cost of living, economic anxiety. Even some Somalis said outright that the Democrats failed them on those fronts.

You can see how many who voted for Trump later flipped in New York and supported someone like Zohran Mamdani.

That’s because, unlike establishment Democrats, real progressives actually lead with reformist, economic agendas that speak directly to people’s material needs. The average Democrat behaves like a centrist, often just serving corporate donors and voting for them feels like more of the same.

Mamdani built a broad coalition by focusing on local issues and tangible reforms. He energized a lot of first-time, young voters who turned out in large numbers and that made a huge difference.

Also, all these Republican MAGA weirdos raging at him are completely out of touch. He’s running for mayor in a city that’s nearly 90% progressive and consistently votes for social democratic DFLers at both the local and state levels.

They act like he’s going to radically change the political landscape when in reality, Minneapolis has already implemented many of the policies he supports. What he’s proposing isn’t extreme for that city , it reflects what the majority of residents already want. Minneapolis is, and has long been, a progressive city.

Politics in America isn’t so different from Somalia’s. In the U.S., corporate donors control the system in Somalia(Especially the FGS), it’s foreign donors. Either way, the public grows disillusioned for the same reasons.

You see a similar contrast at local levels. Just like how Minneapolis or Vermont are more progressive and responsive due to local funding, some Somali federal states with less donor dependency also tend to be more accountable and people-focused.

Governments that are locally funded and inclusive tend to be less corrupt and more effective , everywhere.
