He was good in conflict and belligerence, but lacked in diplomacy, benevolence, and restraint.
Any good leader should be comfortable in conflict, but conflict alone cannot solve a nation's problems and thus a good leader needs to also excel in the more humane aspect.
It would have been good had Barre had a powerful co-executive with a more humane side to temper his conflict-personality. Sort of like a tough parent and the gentle parent; Somalis are like a child who needs both.

Perfect comment. Siyad Barre was a military man needed in time of conflict with other nations, not as a President so that he can brutalise his own people.
Remember, nobody elected Siyad Barre, Somalis had enough sense to know that he just needed to wear fatigues and stay out of politics but he SEIZED power and we all live in the aftermath of that terrible error.

We have to embrace the Sub-Saharan destiny of Somalia/Somaliweyn & forget about that shithole thats filled with primitive tribal monkeys & religous nutcases.
If he did not seize power the civil war would happen then. And we would be in a worse state. However somalis do not respect autority what so ever. Instead of 1 federal president we need a board of presidents hailing from each state. If it is the case that one of the states is not co working with the others it will be simply neclected or taken over by the rest of the states. Central government ain't for anyone especialy somalis who are rebelious in nature
