Official Puntland Political Parties Thread

Wait a minute. So the three biggest parties in the local elections will be eligible to run for presidential and parliamentary elections? That is absolutely terrible walahi

Imagine in City A, one party wins, but they're not among ghe largest three parties overall. That party does great job in the city council, but are barred from participating in general elections because they're not among the top three. The two years between local and presidential should be a period to see a whether the party you voted for did a good job. If they did, you can reward them by voting for them, if did a terrible job, you can punish them by voting for someone else

By eliminating the seven other parties, we are headed towards the failed SL system wherein three parties have a monopoly on the voting system.

Isn't the idea of restricting the number of parties to a certain number, to ensure that every subclan doesn't have its own little party which would essentially be qabiil based system?

That's what they claim. You can eliminate clan politics by various other measurements than just restricting the number of parties. TPEC already made a requirement for parties to have presence and offices in all districts, every district should have their own candidacy list. You can implement the requirement to have a certain threshold in at least two districts in every gobol. There are many solutions.

Limiting the number of parties results in having a monopoly. If there are many players you'll ensure one party won't have the absolute majority, this will force them to work together and reach consensus. The more players, the less corruption. One of the reasons why local elections haven't taken place in years is because three parties have monopoly, they don't want elections and lose their seats.

This is a tricky and to me a very interesting problem. I don't either solution really addresses the problem properly.

You have outlined a problem with having only three parties, and I dont disagree. The TPEC requirements you have outlined don't address the issue of each clan essentially having their own party. There is nothing stopping them registering a shill candidate/district office. There is no way the TPEC will have the funding to ensure every candidate and district off is legitimate.

Here in the UK I have seen parties just nominally nominate a candidate in an area they have no chance of winning. You will never actually see that candidate have an actually presence in that constituency or actually campaigning there.

I'm not claiming to have an answer here. Just outlining that both approaches are fraught with issues.

Xarmaajo he doesn't represent Darood. Now he shows he represent Hawiya. So he represent outsider that want to break down Somalia. Imagine Hawiya and Daroods has common goal to bring down this xarmaajo.
