Watch this documentary it will open your mind. It was filmed in the early 2000s so maybe things have changed since then.
Aidiid and Ali mehdi before the civil war were buying massive amounts of guns from the Italian government/private sector. This was the time when the republicans/communist of Italy came back in power around the 80’s. While aidid was in the kacaan as a general he helped the Italians embezzle hundreds of millions from Somalia and Italia in exchange for a kickback. When they didn’t pay him his share he sued them in Italian court lol. That socialist government in Italy was heavily associated with the underground world (mafia). Later when the government descended into chaos he again betrayed his people and let them put nuclear waste all in Mogadishu and even the coast line. He even weaponized it and had the ancient city of Hafun and its seabed buried with waste because an opposing faction (MJ) controlled it.
