Not feeling somali enough

i am focused on my life and deen, I’m just recounting my experience

this is normal, everyone feels like a stranger, i just learned to become one instead of fighting it

I get what you’re saying though, the Somalis who were raised around each other in Toronto have their own micro-culture going on.

I came to this country 20 years before my family so grew up with aunts and uncles and they were abusive so when I had the chance I went to university, and cut all ties so all my friends were mostly non Somali when my family came this past year to the U.K it was really obvious that we lived different lives but we are making efforts.

I’ve heard a lot of Somalis were like this back in the day they had this mentality that they did you a favor and to return that you were gonna be a slave for the household.

Do you guys ever feel like you’re not somali enough? I was born and raised in Toronto so I’ve always been around Somalis, but I went to a school outside the city where most people were timo jileec or cadaan. As a result I had no somali friends (aside from cousins my age) until I went to uni two years ago. Now when I hang out with my somali friends I feel like a poser lol. Even though we look, dress and talk the same it seems that it’s obvious to everyone that im the odd one out. Am I being neurotic or have any of you experienced this? What do I do?

yep join the club no somali friends, no Somalis in my area and now my kids are growing without Somalis so yeah this is a thing, but still everytime I see a somali person that connection is just amazing nothing can compare.

i am surrounded by Somalis now but I wasn’t when I was younger so I think it stunted me culturally lol

yep join the club no somali friends, no Somalis in my area and now my kids are growing without Somalis so yeah this is a thing, but still everytime I see a somali person that connection is just amazing nothing can compare.

exactly the rapport and comfort i get around Somalis is better than my other friendships. i wish id had it earlier
