hes a textbook newyorker, no empathy and very cutthroat (especially wallstreet), he literally went bankrupt on purpose several times with his businesses because it wouldn't effect him but would his investors its all about the hustle there nobody gives a shit about anyone, which is very different to the nice kind people your used to in Minnesota(kindest people in the USA)

You have to understand that New Zealand had a more liberal gun laws than the United States of America. All you need is a gun license & then, you can buy as many guns as you want like the automatic heavy guns that the murderer used in the mosques massacre in Christchurch without the State ever knowing how many guns you own and their serial numbers. You could collect as much guns as you want and could literally start a war with the government with these weapons obtained legally. Most of their economy is based on farming products and the farmers loved their guns without government interference. No government has ever dared to change these laws. Now, an opportunity has presented itself to the government to rein in and have some control in guns laissez-faire.

They just so happen to look the other way when a known unstable person buys enough bullets to mow down a state.

They should’ve learnt a lesson from the Norwegian massacre when the deluded neo-nazi terrorist guy Anders Behring massacred 77 people. However, New Zealand with its liberal gun laws has never had a mass shootings. Furthermore, the killer is an Australian and the Far Right here were popular with certain sections of the community and politicians for quiet a while. Since Trump came to power, the pendulum has swung to their side, but none of their supporters (both the political elite and the public) had in their wildest dream ever envisaged like the Christchurch massacre. Since this massacre has been declared a terrorist act, the focus is now on white neo-nazi terrorism. They were perceived to be a menace short of terrorist attack. This attack has changed everything.

Don't want to unsettle you but US intelligence agencies know pretty much everything there's to know about you.

I.e. when you wake up in the morning and how often you shit just by tracking you by your phone.

They just store the data for future analysis if you're a person of interest.

However they could easily put together machine learning models that predict behaviors of mass shooters and put up alerts for anything suspicious with minimal computing resources.

Tech like that had been around since the 90s.

New Zealand might not have the NSA's budget but since they only have to watch a smaller population they could watch out for more things.
