Care to give any examples of names southern Somalis have that end in -ow.

I know in the north we tend to add -ow when calling for one another, like "Waar Abdi Hakiimoow/Faaraxow/Jamacow"

It's in the somali language. When you call a male the name ends with ow with females it ends with y.

Mostly likely he is Hawiye or one of their neighbouring clans. I'm sure hes not Darood.

In Djibouti/Somaliland/Ogaden/Puntland/Gedo nobody has names ending in -ow. As @Armadillo said it seems popular with Hawiyes.

Most pre-Islamic Somali names don't end in -ow.

It's a regional thing, not a pre-Islamic thing, as they add -ow to Islamic names like Xasanow.
