There was no American airlift as the the KMT evacuated on their merchant and military ships into the Island and PLA invasion just as now it's highly costly one and hard to do unless you're willing to sacrifice 500k soldiers

The main problem was that no one came out of the Civil War as a victor, a victor that could defeat the opposition and unite the country. Neither the rebels or the government and it's loyalists managed to win and we're suffering the consequences of that today.
