Of course they can. This type of immature segregation fosters toxic ideas about the people. If a platonic relationship can never exist, and since fornication is a grave sin, you are essentially alienated from the opposite gender, until marriage is feasible ofc, but even then you're allowed to only have affable interactions with only one (four if you're male) of them.
If a person is isolated from a group he/she can never comprehend their thoughts, emotions or behaviors. Thus losing empathy for them. And with lack of empathy comes lack of sympathy, which means dehumanizing, or inventing your own toxic assumptions to fill that isolated void (e.g woman are timid/emotional/superficial etc). Essentially turning them into a caricature.
Just look at the middle east and their rampant misogyny and harassment, even the disgusting amount of rapes in India.
People are meant to socialize, express who they are by sharing experiences and befriending one another. This is the human part. Suppressing it does more harm than good.
