Koreans make a movie about Somalia

Unironically, I have been to South Korea in 2016.

They know nothing about Somalia. I had to explain where it was located.

Well i'm sure a bunch of them are looking into it now and forming an idea.

It's true what you are saying. Usually when you travel to Asia, you get peged with Nigerian fraud stereotype and suspicions. Or with Black American stereotypes and perceptions, like gangster, hip hop or Will smith.

Sir I look closer to an Indian than to a Nigerian, lol, not even joking when it comes to this.

Do you have Timo Jileec?

Ngl i looked up and i have no idea how Koreans view Indians but i don't think they will judge on apearance alone, but also what country you come from

Yeah if you don’t have the general madow phenotype. You won’t face as much racist stereotypes about black people.

Arabs and Indians are despised in many countries.

Truthfully only Whites and Northeast Asians have racial privilege when they travel abroad.

Its the highest grossing film in Korea, but doubt it will reach the west. The film sucks despite the reviews.

At least they used black people for this, not as much of an L

I am glad there are barely any Somali actors, gives the movie less legitimacy. I would like it if there were Somali producers or writers as that actually has an impact on the movie.

I was going to watch this movie with some friends, one of whom is Korean but lockdown.

I've yet to see a movie about Somalis that has Somalis as the cast, they always cast other Africans, is it really hard to find Somalis it's not like we're an endangered species or something

Captain Phillips casted Somalis.

Barkhad Abdi was a limo driver before he auditioned for the movie.

Its either other Africans who look nothing like us, or the most unattractive Somali they can possibly find. Clear agenda.

You can’t deny that he’s a good actor.

The movie wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful without his presence.

It’s for those reasons I think the movie company didn’t cast him on purpose. He just happened to be the best Somali actor they could find.

It's called typecasting. They typecasted Somalis, there was a Somali girl from Minnesota who wrote about her experiences growing up with Somalias bad media image:
When he didn’t receive a callback, and it was announced on television that the producers had found their pirate, Barkhad Abdi, Rinji screamed at the TV, "Man, I thought they said dark-skinned and skinny, not ugly as hell!" I cackled for days every time I recalled Rinji’s reaction, not because I found Barkhad Abdi particularly ugly, but because Hollywood’s stereotypes are absurd — and represent just how much work we have left to do.

Her cousin auditioned for the movie and they layed out a criteria for what they were looking for:
The criteria was simple: dark-skinned, lanky, tall — what many Somali men, Rinji included, naturally look like.

According to her, there was tons of Handsome Somali men that showed up for the audition including her cousin Rinji but they picked Barkhad Abdi because he had a fobby accent with broken English, stained crooked teeth ,ugly and looked malnourished they wanted to form absurd stereotypes. He wasn't picked for his acting skills. Saying ''I am the Captain Now,* while looking miserable isn't good acting.

I agree with @digaagjecel , it's too late to care about Somalis/Somalias media reputation , it is in shambles and will more likely get worse in the coming decades.

Just firm it, let it run its course and focus on other more important things. This is the price we are paying.

Nobody is going to watch this movie anyway.
Jo in sung is a top actor and hasn’t done a movie in over 2 years. It’s like Robert Downey Jr being off screen for 2 years and everyone is anticipating his next starring and this is the one.
