They know nothing about Somalia. I had to explain where it was located.

I am glad there are barely any Somali actors, gives the movie less legitimacy. I would like it if there were Somali producers or writers as that actually has an impact on the movie.

You can’t deny that he’s a good actor.

The movie wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful without his presence.

It’s for those reasons I think the movie company didn’t cast him on purpose. He just happened to be the best Somali actor they could find.

It's called typecasting. They typecasted Somalis, there was a Somali girl from Minnesota who wrote about her experiences growing up with Somalias bad media image:

According to her, there was tons of Handsome Somali men that showed up for the audition including her cousin Rinji but they picked Barkhad Abdi because he had a fobby accent with broken English, stained crooked teeth ,ugly and looked malnourished they wanted to form absurd stereotypes. He wasn't picked for his acting skills. Saying ''I am the Captain Now,* while looking miserable isn't good acting.

I agree with @digaagjecel , it's too late to care about Somalis/Somalias media reputation , it is in shambles and will more likely get worse in the coming decades.

Just firm it, let it run its course and focus on other more important things. This is the price we are paying.

Jo in sung is a top actor and hasn’t done a movie in over 2 years. It’s like Robert Downey Jr being off screen for 2 years and everyone is anticipating his next starring and this is the one.
