There used to be a sizable and growing Somali community in NYC that dates back to the early 1900s. But after the civil war broke out in 1991, Somali migration patterns shifted. Instead of heading to NYC or the DC/Virginia area, many Somalis began settling in places like Columbus, Minneapolis, and other parts of the Midwest.

Some families in DC and Virginia stayed, and their descendants today are mostly upper-class professionals in respected fields. In contrast, a lot of the Somali old heads in NYC ended up selling their properties and businesses and moved to Minnesota.
Back in the day, Somalis in New York ran gas stations, delis, restaurants, textile shops, community centers , some were even involved in import-export businesses, bringing goods in from Somalia.
Interestingly, there seems to be a bit of a revival now. I’ve noticed online that more Somalis are starting to move back to NYC again.
