Is foreign aid halting somalia's development

Foriegn aid has a long history in somalia from colonial times to our first 2 presidents and of course Siad Barre (which played a huge part in his downfall) to our current situation. We recieve billions of dollars in aid and are by most metrics the 1st or second most corrupt nation on earth it is a recipe for disaster. The leaders of somalia have no incentive to help somalia since they can make millions off of foreign aid money while the average somali never sees this money as seen by the funds that were suppose to help flood victims disappearing. The status quo is favorable to the top of somalia because they get more aid money. I can think of two solutions the international community needs to realize that trickle down aid does not lead to results as seen by the last 30 years and start investing in communities projects rather than corrupt politicians. Or two stopping aid all together since it does not help the average somali and will help politicans be less corrupt (maybe we can get 5th most corrupt) and will allow the international community to stop meddling in our affairs. What are yall thoughts?

I could agree with you but then we’d both be wrong

Singapore, Japan, Germany, South Korea etc... All those developed countries used to get handouts from the rest of the world. Foreign Aid is a necessity as of now.

We need to recognize that countries have differences one shoe does not fit all. South Korea and Signapore are much smaller countries than us and have a much different culture which makes development much easier. Afganistan is a better comparison the international community has tried to help build a state under their own template which has failed massively.

You need foreign aid to survive when most people can't read or write or develop industries.

Hmm

it is halting development since the money goes in to the pockets of corrupt politicians instead of being allocated to development projects

Is Somalia self efficient enough to say no to foreign aid?

That’s the real question.
Countries that are aid dependent never become self sufficient we have practically all of Africa as an example of course Somalia has many others problems like Al Shabaab having control over our most fertile lands. But foreign projects like AMISOM are more than happy to stay and collect a check so we never reach self sufficiency.
