I can have decent ones with people every once in a blue moon. But most of the time either I’m passively going ‘yeah yeah’/waffling nonsense or forcing it and missing out on good potential conversation topics as a result.

Maybe you just overthink stuff, or maybe you're just not contributing to the conversation. If the other person is talking about something and you're just saying "yeah" eventually they'll just stop talking and the conversation will be over.

Eye contact is good too, sometimes nodding when they're talking. It lets them know you're engaged and interested in what they're saying.
