Public Health consultants is in very high demand and you will get good pay, urbanism and landscaping sounds good too but it's not the same as public health in terms of employment prospects if I were you check out statistics on pay in your profession and county.

I've worked for both Municipal and federal government but I would like to try something different. I'm looking at various masters degrees. Another one is public health.

Do PH and specialise in epidemiology or health policy/health economics or health technology assessment. The more statistics you have, the higher of employment

Urban planning is a very important job, especially in developing countries and economies. There will be endless work for you in Africa. It's just building your initial portfolio that's important. Make sure you do a good job the first couple of projects.

Also get acquainted with 3d modelling software like Revit, Sketchup. You can build towns, cities, etc in the virtual world before the real one.

tldr, I think it's a good choice.

Has anyone done this?
International prospects? Career growth?

Sounds a good degree for Somalia. As economy grows and Somalis became more civilized, they will want good looking cities and this know-how comes in handy. With that said, if you will be staying in the west, the competition will be fierce for related jobs and others who are white might always get the job ahead of you.

I would do something technical or science related.

Google definition of your subject:

"What Urban and Regional Planners Do. Urban and regional planners develop land use plans and programs that help create communities, accommodate population growth, and revitalize physical facilities in towns, cities, counties, and metropolitan areas.Nov 14, 2017"

I am certain half of many towns in Somalia WILL BE RAZED TO THE GROUND when they get serious about modern town look(20 years from now perhaps and am being positive). For now, they are building right on the street in front of your house, and if you object, they are calling the habar heblaayo tanks and there is the risk things to become clan wars.

Iska reer badiyo magaalo soo degay badankooda, hopeless. Just about any subject related to Somalis makes me depressed LOL.

I agree. There will come a time, when somalis will get serious and want their cities to look beautiful. That's when they'll search for urban planners, architects, engineers etc.

That is the hope saxib. Even as it is, they compete building personal homes that are well designed. What is missing is good tax collection system and good stewards to put that generated revenue to good infrastructure use. There is the talent, and the wealth can be made, but there is no strong arm of the law that forces any Somali willing to rock the boat to get in line and respect society. Farmaajo and Co are the start in MUQDISHO, hope it gets better from this Inshallah.

In the mean time, We need to get READY for the future since we have opportunities here in the West.
