Consider this: the jihadis would be nothing without Assad ironically, because they were directly supported by him before the war, along with the fact that he released jihadi prisoners instead of moderate prisoners on demand of the protesters. The protests were exclusively secular, so Assad release the jihadis to ruin his opposition's reputation. This has unfortunately succeeded.
