I think the name "Abdi" is one of the coolest names on Earth & here is why.

Let's say it was not a name but a high fashion brand.

Oh you rocking the "Abdi jacket my bro!"

or

Shoes: "ayyy is that the new aBDIs, they look fire!"

It could even be a Car brand. "ABDI SPORT ALS TWIN TURBO V6"

It even sounds like the name of an Egyptian God: ANUBIS, BASTET, ABDI, RA etc.

The only people holding this name back are Somalis. I don't think we deserve it.

It means slave bro. Like not to anything in particular like Abdullahi/Abdullah which means slave of Allah swt. I sometimes wonder why it caught on.

Don't be obtuse, walaal. It's an obvious short for Abdullah. My grandfather was named Abdi but many people on my father's side sometimes just called him Abdullah instead even though, on paper, it was Abdi. Everyone knew what the name was short for. And it doesn't mean slave. It means "My slave". The being saying "My" being God and again; it's short of Abdullah = servant of God.

I'm aware it's a shortening. Still removing a vital part of the name's meaning just makes no sense to me.

Most historical Somalis didn't speak Arabic if they weren't Suldaans, Shaykhs or tradesmen. So like upwards of 70-80% of the population. I bet they just stumbled on it cos it sounded nice to them and gave no thought to the meaning. If they were Arabic speakers "Abdo" might have made more sense which means "His slave" and is common among Arabs like Masris.

Out of every Islamic difference from the arabs this stupid nickname is the one hill most chosen to die on, everything else expect shortening a name related to Allah (swt) is innovation but this isn't?
