How would you improve Somalia?

I have never been to southern Somalia; I was born in Borama. I have only been to Hargeisa and have visited places like Dir Dhaba. My family was one of those who fled Mogadishu when the war started, travelling from city to city in Ethiopia. Eventually, with the help of some local clansmen, they received refugee cards, and the rest is history.

I remember my father telling me about an incident when some Hawiye militia men captured him, mistaking him for a Darod. They were about to kill him when a Habar Gidir woman, who was our neighbour, intervened to help him.

Returning to the main topic, Somalia has become extremely tribal in recent years. While this tribalism has always existed, now that we are in the 21st century, countries must grow and develop. Weakness cannot be tolerated, especially given how Ethiopia and Abiy Ahmed's government are completely violating our sovereignty. In a nation where people do not see Somalia's interests as their own, who can we trust, and how can we address this tribal issue?

Now my question is how would you go about improving Somalia specifically the tribalism?

We need a middle class desperately and jobs. People with money and lives are not going to throw everything away to fight in some random clan battle

I would focus on Borama if I were you, otherwise your father’s experiences down south might end up being your own. Not much has changed down there except the added new element of terrorist extremists. Build roads, hospitals, factories, etc. Perhaps someday Borama might be a place that will save Somali’s.

The tuugo that slaughtered darood and other clans are still there along with their kids atop the land and homes of the victims

It’s true, Walaal. I was just in Borama in 2023. My family has a few homes there and has invested in the area, mashallah. What makes it safe is the police. They aren't perfect, but there was one incident when some Reer Nuur clansmen had a dispute and began firing guns at each other. The police were called, and they arrived quickly to arrest some of the individuals involved. Wallahi, I wish all Somalis could resolve their issues in such a manner.
