1. Sufism isn't a sect there are Shia and Sunni Sufis

2. Sufism is ridiculously diverse some Sufis are indistinguishable from what you think is "normal" and others spin like beyblades

3. Sufis are divided into "orders" and "schools" - their practices vary (see post two), and there have been great "Sufi" thinkers that have contributed to Islamic scholarship

4. Sufi comes from the Arabic word "Suf" (to wrap oneself in wool) which Sufis would cloak themselves as they performed dhikr

5. Asceticism the core of Sufi thought is the severe rejection of materialism for the spiritual.


If you're serious read these two chapters I've pulled from credible academic sources on the matter (a total of ~60 pages combined) and you'll get a very comprehensive crash course including criticism of Sufism in the first text.

The other selection is Classical Islam: A Sourcebook of Religious Literature by Norman Calder, Jawid Mojaddedi & Andrew Rippin ~50 pages

most of you don't even know what sufism is. Thinking it is dancing, circumambulation of saints grave, saying Mada ya Muhammad astagfurallah. All of this is just bidah, shirk and kufr. Sufism to begin with was and is one of the science of Islam like fiqh is as Jurisprudence, aqeeda etc. Sufism is the science of purifying the heart by doing acts of worship like frequent dhikr, fasting or reading quran. All of this good actions purifies the heart. There is a book that I yet to finish called "purification of the soul" compiled from the works of Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali, Ibn Qayyim and Abu Hamid Al Ghazali. Great book. All of these is based on the sunnah instead of these bidah as for Abu Qadir Gilani he was one of the greatest scholars in his time following the Quran and Sunnah, he was a follower of the Hanbali madhab. He was a zuhd and the ones that innovated where those that came after him.

The timoweyn are not your regular sufis, they are known to be scholars of dollars and pretty close to Ethiopian government in Northern Somalia. They consume too khat and collect livestock from the locals.
