We need a census for that my friend.

:kanyehmm:
diaspora sending money back + import economy. this makes life more expensive and people look like they are "richer". but as @Hot Ballah said most of that money ends up in other countries. when the new younger generation of diaspora stop sending money and/or theres domestic industrialization it will be much lower.

anyone know what juba means in Somali? @Nilotic what does Juba actually mean in your language?

'Juba' has no meaning in any of our languages; it was founded as a trading outpost by the Greek merchants that the British encouraged to settle there.

I'm not sure why the Greeks named it Juba, but the name is not Greek or Arabic in origin; the pre-Arab Maghrebis had two rulers with that name, so it must trace its origin to those individuals.

Op the GDP figure you are quoting of 950m must be from many decades ago. The figure I see most sources quoting now as the current GDP of Somalia is 5B. I don't know how they arrived at this figure though. I take any data I see about Somalia with a pinch of salt.

I have noted that when international organizations are publishing their figures and data about African countries, Somalia is sometimes left blank. Labelled as "No data" . I guess the reason is because it's virtually impossible to get accurate data in Somalia in its current state.

Forget south sudan. Why does libya-Afghanistan-iraq-palestine have a higher gdp then somalia. Fucking palestine

Oil, Libya was especially well off before their war, they were arguably the best in Africa.

Regardless, these other war torn countries are still better than us, at least in terms of infrastructure (they have much better roads for example).

Iraq's GDP surprises me though, I thought it'd be lower.

Not really they have oil, but also Iran funnels their exports to Iraq to bypass their sanctions, Iraq’s economy is linked with Iran

South Sudan government budget 1.6bn......which is way more than i expected.

Somalia's government around 400mn, and with 1/3 more population.

I wonder if Somali government is actually overachieving given their budget.

I don't know just how true that figure is -- especially since the war broke out.

Somaliland and Puntland which are part of Somalia have their own budgets.

This needs to be included if you're also including Somalia's population as a whole in your comparison with South Sudan.

Also, South Sudan is an oil exporter. Just like Libya and Iraq.

I think that considering everything, Somalia is actually not doing too bad. Also need to bear in mind that much of these stats are decades old.

South Sudan
GDP: 4 Billion
Population: 11 million

Somalia
GDP: 950 million. The only country in Africa without a 'B'!
Population: 16 million

Anyone else surprised by this? A landlocked country with a WORSE history of violence yet still 10x more prosperous than Somalia?

There is truly no hope!
The corruptions is also 10% bigger than Somalia.
They have something in common and that is the money stolen from both countries majority end up in Kenya.

I'm well aware they have oil.

"Somaliland and Puntland which are part of Somalia have their own budgets."

good point. Somalialnd seems to have an impressive budget...350million. Seems like they are collecting way more per person than the TFG.
