Fair enough. Try to view it under another lens though, is it really any different to western engagements, where the expectation is sometimes a ridiculously expensive ring. Both are culturally enforced, and ours is a culture I happen to particularly like (at the very least I wont bemoan it)

I mean fair enough, kind of. If that's all that's standing between me and a potential wife it's figuratively speaking (and in the literal sense hopefully) a low price to pay. I would probably go on with it I suppose, but it's definitely an aspect of our culture that rubs me the wrong way. It's more logical and justified for her to ask for an even more expensive wedding, higher mehr, honeymoon or whatever the hell she wants as long as it's about her. Paying her family seems extremely archaic, unless maybe marrying from back home, but I don't ever see myself doing that.
