AUN to those that died, however many countries have gone through similar situations and are now moving forward.

Who says that there isn't a day where we can sit down and look past these tragedies and show ourselves true human kindness. What we need is soul searching, not using the dead (AUN) to further our agendas.

You waz good up to here. I fink your soul searching and forget the past ideologue is to farther youre agenda :pachah1:

Your Source confirms my doubts.

It states that the population of Hargeisa And Burao was a combined 140,000 which itself may be high.

For a figure of 50,000 to die, a third of the population would of have to die in both cities. Some figure of 100,000-200,000 would mean all the city would have died and an additional number of people.

Also, the 5000 figure comes from this source which seems to coincide with my doubts about the urban population.

Source- Helen Chapin Metz, ed. Somalia: A Country Study. Washington: GPO for the Library of Congress, 1992.

Me stating that 5000 people died is not meant to reduce the severity of the crimes committed.

With regard to Hargeisa and Burco's population, well, Hargeisa alone had a pre-conflict population of 370,000.

Note the mooryaan Ogaden squatters. It was the Isaaqs who sacrificed the most in Somali Galbeed during the 77 war.

As for the death toll of the genocide, a reliable contemporary source (1990) from HRW says it was 50,000-60,000.

This is a contemporary estimation. This is from January 1990, before Somaliland even existed + SNM did not seek ictiraaf.

50k + half million refugees to Ethiopia. It was deliberate state-sanctioned assault on a whole clan.

These are the Isaaq areas that were affected by the brutality of Siad barre regime, not only Hargeisa and Burco.

@Juuqbuuqluuq @Factz note this map showing how Siad Barre mercilessly mined Somaliland regions. The pattern was designed to cause maximum destruction in the most population regions, along roads and the border to trap fleeing civilians

Even the New York Times journalist's article from 1988 states that mines were laid by the SNA in the houses of Hargeisa and Burco to kill returning refugees

Here is more evidence The New York Times, 1989

In addition to the estimated 10,000 civilians killed in May 1988 alone, which the NYT had already reported, tens of thousands more civilians were killed by the Somali National Army in the months that followed

"A report commissioned by the State Department says the Somali Army ''purposely murdered'' at least 5,000 unarmed civilians over 10 months ending in March.

In one instance, at least 500 men of the Isaak clan, whose members make up the major armed opposition to the Somali Government, were rounded up and killed by the army, most with their throats cut, and then buried in mass graves, says the report by a State Department consultant that documents wide-ranging human rights abuses.

The army appeared to have made systematic attacks against Isaak villages, watering points and grazing areas while at the same time conducting ''roundups, summary executions and massacres of many hundreds, if not more, of unarmed civilian Isaaks.''

''The appearance that victims were selected for these killings principally because of their ethnic identity is unmistakable,'' the report said.

Civilian detainees of the Government were subjected to ''severe beatings, stabbing, prolonged choking, use of metal clips and electric shock on flesh and testicles and immersion in excrement.''.

On July 16, Western embassies in the capital reported that the army had killed 46 men of Isaak origin on a beach outside the capital. With rare exceptions, journalists have been refused entry to Somalia in the last 18 months."

Evidence from the Washington Post, 1990

GENOCIDE IN THE HORN OF AFRICA

By Almami Cyllah and John Prendergast, July 1, 1990

Genocide is one of the ugliest words in our language. The deliberate attempt to depopulate is reserved for the likes of Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and Idi Amin. New seats will have to be reserved soon in this gallery of mass murderers for three of the bloodiest dictators in the world: Mengistu Haile Mariam in Ethiopia, Omer el-Bashir in Sudan and Siad Barre in Somalia.

In Somalia, the Isaaq clan is the target of government genocide. The Isaaq-based Somali National Movement (SNM), an insurgency group headquartered in Ethiopia for years, invaded Somalia in mid-1988 and now controls a large part of the north.

The government's response has been brutal. An aerial bombing campaign devastated large sections of the cities and productive areas in the north. Wells have been poisoned, villages have been burned and Isaaq civilians have been rounded up and executed by government troops.

President Barre has also supplied weapons to Ethiopian refugees inside Somalia and to opposition Ethiopian groups to attack Isaaq civilians. Africa Watch estimates that 50,000 Somali citizens have been killed during the past year and a half, the majority being Isaaq civilians.

50-100 k is more than realistic, i completely agree. Hargeysa the second most populated somali city can't be bombed and by people later called the African Dresden, with only 5k people losing their life. Same applies for the at the time third most populated city Burco and the many more regions and cities.

The funny thing is how dhabayaacos try to play the rational thinker, who made an unbiased research, as if they are not full of hate and jealousy subhanaAllah. Even naming SNM and USC in the same sentence with SSDF is absolutly shameless

Fake map. According to that map Bohol, Dararweyne and other towns settled by SY wasn't attacked by Siad Bare troops.

Your source contridicts @Futurist sources.

It says the population of Hargeysa was close to 400,000 while the whole urban population of Somalia at the time was 400,000. The governor of Hargeysa? Was that Said Barre government? Of course, they would overestimate the population as a way to mask the bombings and fleeing of the city.

Also while I've seen the sources that have stated that the death toll was between 50,000-100,000, those come from organizations which always tend to use a methodology that would lead to overestimation. The north was a warzone so it was unlikely they were able to get full accesses to the sites of the bombings and massacres. An example of this is in Congo were they overestimated the death toll at being close to 5 million, recent revisions by researchers brought that number down. International organizations tend to overestimate deaths in conflicts as overestimating death tolls is better than underestimating them for obvious reasons.

Also, I'm Isaaq on both sides of my family. So calm down with the insults and have a civil discussion.
