France said on Friday that it is recalling its ambassadors in the US and Australia over a recent security deal that scrapped a $40 billion French submarine contract in favour of US nuclear submarines, Reuters reported. The military pact, known as AUKUS, involves the US, UK and Australia and aims to “meet the threats of today and tomorrow” in the Indo-Pacific, US President Joe Biden said on Thursday. On Thursday, France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called the decision a “stab in the back,” while a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said the AUKUS deal “seriously damages regional peace and stability” and “intensifies the arms race.”
