Helping out our less fortunate relatives back home is a noble thing to do. After all, charity begins at home.

• 'Worship none, but Allah. Treat with kindness your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to people; be steadfast in prayer; and practice regular charity'.
  • 'Allah will deprive usury of all blessing, but will give increase for deeds of charity. For He loves not creatures ungrateful and wicked'.
• 'Those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayers and regular charity, will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve'.

Another approach that my family has taken is to pool together a large sum of money and send it to each family to start their own business. We remind them that anything can happen to us, such as death, and it's better for them to be independent and find a way to make a living on their own.

Sound advice. An old Chinese proverb: 'Give a man a fish, he is fed for a day; teach a man to fish, he'll feed oneself for a life time'.
