European Languages in Africa

The zones where Amharic and Swahili are spoken are made smaller on this map by only taking into account the 1st language zone.

The 2nd language zone of Amharic and Swahili are much larger.
Also Djibouti should be half dark green, do they think it's all Afar or some shit
:wtfdis:

I lowkey wish Italian came back, not to erase Somali but it's kind of a beautiful language.
Why would you want to keep a colonizer language? Especially the langaabs of europe? They’re already on a high horse and refer to Somalia as “la nostra ex colonia” which is our former colony. Not to mention Italy is one of the nost racist countries in the world. In 2021, they will call a black person a monkey publicly and no one will care, they will call an asian “yellow” and no one cares. Not to mention they banned the words “allu akbar”.
Erase all english french and Italian from Somalia 🇸🇴

Italy is the reason we have pirates in the first place and they played a role in promoting communism in somalia which ended with us taking an L against Ethiopia. f*ck their language i hope they choke on tgeir tiramisu

The Barre government and the higher education system (colleges, universities) mainly promoted it, but the 90s civil war destroyed these institutions and then during the rebuilding phase only English and Arabic have been promoted as foreign languages to be learned, wiping out any incentive to learn Italian in Somalia.
Nope the regime didn't promote it after Af soomaali was introduced to be taught in schools and official working language when latin writing system was adopted.

Only Arabic remained to be the only foreign language to be taught in schools while Italian ad English in university

Discuss: Why do European languages have such a hold on the people of Africa?

View attachment 197220
(Blue is francophone, green is anglophone)

Why not just make the native languages the official language? Why see African languages as "inferior" to European ones?
Cuz colonial powers brought different ethnic groups together under their administration and after colonization the colonial languages became the lingua franca of the new independent African countries so no ethnic group language is favored against the others and to show unity and equality to everyone and easy communication between citizens.

Not all colonies were effective. Also, colonies were based on economics, specifically plantations. The only places worth a damn was in the south in Somalia, specifically the Jubaland region, which was the focus for colonizers there. The majority of Sub-Saharan Africa unfortunately had fantastic environmental conditions for plantations, and as such, European colonizers simply invested more towards them.

Three major European powers colonized the somalis. Not onr but three.

Our lands might not have been good enough for plantations. But our coast was the primary goal. The goban coast alone used to generate more lacag than any of the plantations in ssa.

Hence why they stopped the goban coast trade.

Please don't lower us to some bs stuff.

I bet Somalis outside of the urban centers didn't speak it , and they were the majority pre-independence ,the reer baadiye , village folks ,small towns ...

I have heard of people in the baadiye that speak it bro, especially those in the 55 to 65 range.

Schools up until the 70s in Somalia had to teach in Italian, there was no other option.

Somaliland was different in that the vast majority of the populace was not educated until independence (due to their trusteeship status) but in the South, Italian was taught widely.

I cringe every time I hear an pre colonial Parlament speak. Semi linguistic creatures.their English is 29 times worse than mine I didn't even Study English
