Ethiopia's population in 2025 is about 135 million

It's actually 25 million . The Somali regional government have to keep accurate track when they roll out programs to meet the needs of the citizens.

The Somali population is the 2nd largest ethnic population inside Ethiopia.

It would mean that Somali population is the largest as well in the region with 50 million which exceeds the 40-45 of Oromo's in total if you take all 5 regions together.

Ogaden 25 mill, Somalia 20 mill, Djibouti 1 million and NFD 5 million = 51 million in total.
You always come with facts so I’ll will take your word

25 million for DDS meaning it has more population then Somalia although Somalia has more major urban centres although DDS is more rural with both livestock and agriculture based people

Undoubtedly Akhi, just check hadiths books ... authentic narrations attributed to the Prophet mention that the Kaaba will be demolished by an Ethiopian man .. at that time there will be no muslims in HOA

I hope Dir migrates away from the area before this disaster strikes 🙏💀

How is that possible? That means there’s more somalis in Galbeed than in Somalia.

I just checked the Somali Regional State Wiki page and it says the same thing 😳

I could’ve sworn that the official numbers were 12 million or something awhile ago.
It looks like it's from this source, a statistic from 2023/2024 (2015/2016 in Ethiopian Calendar)

Before 2018, there wasn't any accurate data collection or updates. Now they have a local government that has control over the whole area and can accurately keep track of it and do a census.

It's not really suprising that they have a large population, i have said it myself Galbeed has productive lands that can sustain a significant population, it historically functioned as the 2nd breadbasket in the Somali economy.

It's also not surprising for another reason as well, they have better food security now, increased agricultural growth and access to better sanitation, water and health care over the last 6 years, so naturally it would be higher.

Somalia's population numbers are likely under reported unlike Galbeed. There is no region wide national census. The Somali National Bureau of Statistics and other sources provide estimates, these are often based on extrapolated data from previous surveys and reports

The last national census in Somalia was conducted in 1975-85, and subsequent population estimates are based on projections and surveys, which can be inaccurate due to the changing dynamics of the population.

Is the Ogaden 100% Somali then? And also this is assuming Somalia is 100% Somali as well

According to figures i've seen 95-97% of the population are Somali and only 2% are Oromo and 0.9% are Amhara and 0.03% Gurage.

So if we extrapulate that onto the numbers it would be Somali: 23.75 to 24.25 million, Oromo: 500,000, Amhara: 225,000, Gurage & Others: 25,000

You are right about galbeed being a bread basket for agriculture and livestock a lot of the livestock shipped from berbera and bosaso etc ports comes from their @Step a side come look at these numbers we are silently the second largest group 😂🤷‍♂️

Nice how about Somalia?

Ethiopia os a poor country with zero infrastructure and is unstable not worth it for a westerner to invest

Smart investors should be looking at Argentina ,Vietnam and Mexico
Vietnam and Mexico. Argentina is a highly structured economy. Don't let the Milei propaganda fool you. That economy is unrealized but extremely institutionally mature, which makes any novel flexibility very short-lived. What Milei did was give it steroids for optics, but you see it going back to the mean. Mexico is a country with raw, unrealized potential.

Ethiopia's infrastructure is way better than people give it credit for. The social dysfunctions of Ethiopia run parallel to its achievements. The centralized developments have improved, while issues are localized in regions. Do you know why this is the case? Because Ethiopia is an imperialist construction. Rome at its height had a lot of problems in different regions but it did not reduce its advancements in other ways. Ethiopia, as an imperial construction, has a strong centralization that extracts value from the different regions; it claims these different regions but the state and those different regions are not really one, although they are based on bureaucratic and economic diffusions. One large marker of this glue is the relative infrastructural and economic homogeneity from north to south. I'm not talking about the degree of development, but it is like China in its standardization as a marker of its control signature. It has seeped into the identity of the groups as well, where people in the Gamo have the same nationalist perceptions as people in the north. Even these Oromos who want out are much defined by this system. They are not really different from the other groups.

I have talked about this before, but ask yourself, why do you think that, no matter who takes the helm of control, be it the Tigray, Amhara, Oromo, etc., they are always the same in state-based matters? Their state engagement is extremely stable while somehow the ethnic tension and need for power self-expression that is somehow distinct. It's because those groups were part of an imperialist project, and they furthered those legacies from their own dispositions and aligned almost completely with that bureaucracy. All these people have a strong imperial belief despite holding strong ethnic hatred. But if you hear them independently, they will tell you that the central state identity is separate from the ethnic one, and they all buy into it. That is why massacres and regional wars can happen without breaking the foundation of the state. It's very unique in modern times.

All of those people use and identify with the state vernacular. You'll be shocked how distinct ethnic groups who are Omotic are no different than a Tigray in that sense. Case in point, look at what happened with the Sidama. All they did was rearrange and bargain for their own piece of the system, not be completely divorced from it.

Somalis had 4.5 million in 2007. Oromos nearly doubled their population size, and Somalis have a higher birthrate than them. It is safe to say it is 10-12 million in a reasonable conservative estimate, as Somalis had a higher population increase compared to the national average. I saw the fertility rate a few years ago, and Somalis had the highest in producing children. In 2016, that number was at 7.2. It was recorded to be ~5.7 in 2019, still the highest.
SR has been peaceful for a while, especially in the fertile farming areas. The last time my uncle was in Awbarre, he estimated the population to be undercounted in there and Fafaan in general, safely to say when counting the SR pop, best double it, cause those Ethiopians undercounted.

Keep in mind, Ethiopia was historically used for the rest of Africa, these Abyssinians co-opted the name recently, in fact, only towards the late 19th century, during the reign of Emperor Menelik II (1889–1913)

Every major Somali clan family is represented in that region , and for good reason. Historically, Galbeed served as a central hub in the Somali world. Massive amounts of agricultural and pastoral produce used to flow from there to ports like Berbera and Zayla, feeding expansive trade routes north and south.

When Siad Barre's advisor called Galbeed “the umbilical cord of Somalia,” he wasn’t exaggerating. The region has always been culturally central , a vital lifeline from which Somalia drew identity, economic sustenance, historical continuity, and cultural vitality.

During the Kacaan era, the Somali government had strategic development plans centered around the Ogaden. It was seen as critical for food security, agro-export expansion, and regional integration. And that hasn’t changed.

Today, Galbeed remains food self-sufficient and continues to expand. It supplies huge volumes of agricultural produce to markets inside Somaliland, with dozens of logistics companies operating across the border to move goods. This reflects a centuries-old trade pattern still alive today.

The region's extensive grazing lands across its green hilly landscapes make it ideal for livestock. When Ethiopia claims to have the largest livestock population in Africa, they're primarily referring to Galbeed ,that’s the actual livestock powerhouse.
1748281466296.jpeg

On top of that, Galbeed holds over 10 million hectares of arable land, plus major water sources like the Wabi Shabelle, Genale, Dawa, and Webi rivers , far more than most other regions in the Horn.

Unlike the fabricated stats coming from Addis Ababa, Galbeed’s productivity is visible on the ground , whether in local consumption or rising export volumes.

They’ve even started producing rice to cut reliance on imports, which is a smart move given shifting global food prices

This is also why Puntland has been investing in Garcad Port and building a trade corridor inland , to link into Galbeed’s productivity and feed food supplies into central Somalia’s more fragile areas, while giving Galbeed additional sea access.

In short, if Galbeed's population exceeds Somalia’s, it shouldn’t be surprising , it reflects the historical and contemporary weight the region holds in all aspects of Somali life.

Add the Somalis from Oromia on top of that. Ethnic Somalis are easily the largest in the Horn.

Bale, East Hararghe is extremely dense. Loads of Somalis there.

Yeah lots of Somalis in Oromia/Hararghe are bilingual with Oromo due to living in close proximity. Some clans like Jaarso, Akisho and Gurgura flip flop between being Somali or Oromo. I think the same goes with Somalis living near Borana in Kenya.

In fact, there was a thread in the history/culture section that talked about Somalis historically living as far west as Shewa which sounded crazy. At one point Somalis were directly neighboring the Amhara.

Numbers mean nothing and ethopia has shown tht 😂 they needed soo many countries to help them in 77. Somalis always beat them 1 to 1 when they dont have 100 allies helping them. Todays no different.
