Ethiopia warns Egyptian plan to set up a military base in Somaliland

Addis Ababa. Ethiopia on Monday warned Egypt to refrain from establishing any military base that would pose a security threat to the East African region.

The reaction comes days after an Egyptian delegation met Somaliland President Musa Bihi Abdi in Hargeisa where the two sides discussed Cairo’s proposal to set up a military facility in the self-declared state.

“As a sovereign country, Egypt has a legitimate right to create relationships with any county in the region,” Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, told the Nation.

However, he adds that Egypt’s relationships should not be established at the expense of another country.

“If Egypt’s intent to have a presence in the region would be a threat to a third country, that won’t be appropriate,” he said.

“In this case, we need to have concrete instances of what’s happening…we hope it won’t be at the expense of Ethiopia or any other neighbouring countries because if so, it will be unlawful, against humanity and international peace and security.”

Ethiopia has a good relationship with most of its neighbours including Somaliland.

It’s not yet known if Somaliland has accepted Egypt’s proposal, but the two have reportedly reached an agreement “on the exchange of high-level representation offices in Hargeisa and Cairo.”

An Ethiopian delegation led by Finance minister Ahmed Shide went to Hargeisa days after the Egyptian delegation had paid a visit.

But Amb Mufti rejects speculation that Ethiopia’s visit was due to concerns over Egypt’s plan.

“These are routine schedules aimed to discuss bilateral relations between the countries and it has nothing to do with the Egyptian delegation’s visit to Somaliland.”

Meanwhile, tripartite talks between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan failed to reach a final agreement over the Grand Renaissance Dam and its use of the Nile River for filling.

Some observers say Egypt’s interest in gaining a foothold in Eastern Africa has piqued after Ethiopia said it will stick to its plan to fill the mega dam.
Earlier last month, South Sudan rubbished reports that it has agreed to Egypt’s request to build a military base in Pagak, a town bordering Ethiopia.
Last week, Addis Ababa announced that the first phase of filling of the dam was complete, with the government hinting that it will start generating electricity in a few months.

Downstream countries, mainly Egypt, have repeatedly warned Ethiopia against filling the dam before a final deal is reached.

SL is a “sovereign” state and they can have relationships and establish any military base in it’s soil. Ethiopia can’t do much tbh. SL is a monster that Ethiopia created and now the monster became too big and came back to bite it master lmao. Egypt is trying to play a long- term game here. This is very interesting development. Will see how it plays out.

Abyi Ahmed should shut the f*ck up, and try to maintain his boyfriend Farmaajo. Somaliland is a sovereign nation, it can decide who they invite or grant military basis to. f*ck Ethiopia though and f*ck Farmaajo an enemy of those two (like Egypt) is a friend of mine.

Siyaasada ha socotoo, in Mujaahid Muse we trust.

I hope our long term friends SL also understand that this is a very risky gamble. Sometimes people poker/gamble too high and lose everything including that what they had before. This is just like that. Ethiopia can easily offer something to Egypt and force Egypt abandon Somaliland altogether. Ethiopia can even make it a precondition for any Ethio/Egyptian agreement. Ethiopia can also use its diplomatic relations to block any foreign country to have relations with Somaliland including the UAE. Any country will have then to choose between Ethiopia and Somaliland. This is all without even mentioning the military option. I hope our long term SL friends calculate all the risks before playing this high risk gamble game. Why lose everything for something that has almost 0% chance of becoming reality anyway?

I bet this arabs still didnt make up their minds and thier proposal of establishing military base in Berbera is just a scaremongering agenda to force ethiopia come into the table of discussion.

If their intention is to demolish the Dam and are in need of closer base then they would have to deal with sudan wich is only 15 km from the Dam instead of having one in berbera which is not more closer to the Dam than their southeastern end.

Why would Somaliland risk bringing war to its land by inviting Egypt to build a base? Do they not understand that should war come Somaliland will be draw into it?

We’re not scared of Ethiopia. If they have got ahead of themselves and lost there respect and grasp on what is in their best intrest then they will make an enemy out of SL.

Don’t forget abiye was recently talking about building a taalo in karamarda. Mujahid bixi was the pilot of one of the long range bombers that xasuuqed the xabashis there.

I was sooo happy and overjoyed when Somaliland offered Egypt a military base in their region. I knew it was a huge blunder that's going to cost the Jeegans in the long run. Ethiopia has been an exceptional ally of Jeeganistan for 30 years and assisted their armed struggle against the former Somali dictator. They literally breastfed these utter morons for decades and Jeegans are too fickle to be grateful and appreciative to Ethiopia.

Jeeganistan broke the alliance with this military base offer to Egypt, the bond will never be the same. Ethiopia can crush the hateful SNM admin in Hargeisa if they want to. All we wait for is a befitting response from Ethiopia.

AbdiGeedi

To keep your balance, you must keep moving.
Iranian sources are reporting that Egyptian military is being slowly deployed to Yemen. The Saudi military planes are clandestinely hauling the Egyptians to Aden.

I have suspected from the git-go that the talks between the Egyptian delegation and Somaliland about setting up the Egyptian Naval base was a part of the wider geopolitical game being played in the Gulf by the local monarchs and Israel.

Seeing how Egypt let itself be cucked on the issue of the Habashi dam, I am more and more convinced that Ethiopia is not on the radar for Sisi.
