n 1891, Menelik writes another famous letter to the Governments of Britain, Italy, France, Germany and the Czar of Russia. We note the change of the tone of his voice, because he is a changed man, and he makes his request to fit the man that he became. In this letter, he mentions in the grandest detail the boundaries of his (dreamed) Ethiopia. He writes, “Ethiopia has been for four centuries a Christian island in a sea of pagans.” [20] He continues, “Formerly, the boundary of Ethiopia was the sea ... our frontiers on the sea coast fell into the power of the Muslims.” [21]

Interesting, I knew about the evilness of Ethiopian monarchy, who were the backbone of their imperialist conquests, and how they viewed us (Somalis and Muslims) as inferior people who should've submitted to their rule and gaalnimo; as much as I shouldn't be surprised, it's puzzling to me how they even could lay claim to any Somali land. Thank God, their legacy are disliked by majority of Ethiopians today.

Yeah, if we’re talking about Somali lands. But their other conquests of territory, when they started off as Abyssinia in the highlands didn’t come through the British.

Even if we include the land Britain handed over, they can still be defined as imperialist through political doctrine with their territorial expansion and aspirations of extending political influence beyond their sovereign borders.

Whether it was given to them or forcefully taken during war, doesn’t make them less imperialist. On the contrary, claiming that Ethiopia imperialist didn’t exist is nothing short of ignorance.
