Ethiopia had zero control over Galbeed until 1948

Despite Harar falling to Menelik II and the 1897 treaty that ceded half of British Somaliland over to Ethiopia, the Ethiopians practically had no real control over Ogaden/Galbeed until after the end of WW2. Proof?

To begin with, the Ethiopians failed to make any proper gains on western Somalia despite raiding as far as the Juba basin. Somali warriors despite being cut off from firearm trade were defeating and pushing back Ethiopia multiple times.

Perhaps the most significant of these victories however would be the battle of Luuq that saw the Geledi sultanate defeat an army of 15,000 Ethiopians and being left with only 200 afterwards. (Also AUN Factz)

The Dervish leader Muhammad Abdallah Hassan, the scholar Sheikh Hassan Barsame, I could go on, Somalis have repeatedly defeated Ethiopia and prevented them from getting a foothold in Galbeed. It was only then in an attempt to satiate the greed of Menelik, that the British in 1897 "handed" Galbeed over to Ethiopia. However in truth, this was in name only.

The British of course never owned Galbeed so the treaty was a hollow gesture that never did anything.

More proof that Ethiopia's control over Galbeed was nominal is the fact that many of their attempts at taxations failed.

Furthermore, Somalis weren't even aware that Ethiopia technically owned Galbeed lol and it wasn't until 1934 that the Somali-Ethiopia border was demarcated. There was also of course the brief Italian invasion and only AFTER during 1948 Galbeed was properly integrated into Ethiopia which of course meant that Somalis rebelled soon afterwards.

So to put it shortly, Somalis have defeated Ethiopia several times in battle preventing the annexation of Galbeed like what happened in Harar, Oromia and elsewhere. Ethiopian presence never extended past Jigjiga and all attempts at doing so ended in failure. The 1897 treaty meant jack and was more so an attempt to appease Menelik. And lastly, the belief that it was European presence in Somalia that prevented Ethiopia from controlling us is clearly false as I've outlined.

I'm telling you guys, we fought against three colonial powers + Ethiopia and mostly made it out alright subxanallah

The fact that they handed over Galbede to Ethiopia without even the recommendation of the residents made my mind boil. These men gave King Abdul Aziz the Hijaz despite its independence, so they expanded it as he wanted. As for us, they divided our entire island, out of hatred

“Emperor Menelik of Abyssinia has never
been more than nominal. Not long ago
the Negus sent an army against the dis-
contented ones there, but 30,000 savages,
armed with spears, succeeded in an-
insulating it. Meanwhile the Mullah
proceeded to organise these savages and
inflate their fanaticism. It has been
feared that he might enlist the Gallas,
a tribe whom the Abyssinians have only
kept in subjection so long-by withhold-
ing firearms. Together Gallas and Oga
denese, "if provided with rifles," said a
military expert, could sweep Abyssinia”.

This was written in the daily express 1905.

Someone posted here a map of Ethiopian control of Galbeed. It barely engulfed Jigjiga. Much of Galbeed was free.

Early on they gained some advantages over Harar because the British & French try to blockage arms to Somali tribes in that area, which left them unable to fully defend themselves. So its surprising that they were getting a few success against them with only swords and lances against a fully armed ethiopians

Bari Sultanate and the Dervishes was aiding Harar and Galbeed Somalis by sending them Arms(rifles, ammunition) etc and when they were equipped they were able to turn things around in their favor and defeat them decidedly.

Elsewhwere they sent armies out , only to be defeated by the local Hawiye.

Fun history fact : When they were able to infiltrate Harar, the Somali clergy moved elsewhere and founded Jigjiga, after Ethiopians took advantage of the Egyptian withdrawal with British support.

During Spring of 1897, The Somali soliders led by Garaads devastated Ras Makonnen's (Emperor Haile Selassie's father) army of Abyssinian invaders, killing at least 5,000. The defeat stung Makonnen so bad foreign journalists in occupied Harar reported that he went into seclusion 'crying bitterly'.

Defeated many of the same warriors who had earlier been sent in their victory over the Italian, it was such a devastating loss it stopped them in tracks from further expeditions into Ogaden @Shimbiris

This was all while Somalis were greatly outnumbered and under a Europeans arms embargo (that of course didnt apply to Ethiopia)

@Idilinaa I came across a figure named Dejazmarch Gebre Mariam who apparently set up outposts and rule in Ogaden. You may have also heard of Omar Samatar, an anti-fascist Somali rebel who joined his army and achieved the rank of Fitawrari. Do you know anything more about that?

Apparently they really consolidated proper centralisation around the 70s or 80s and only had central controk in jigjiga and harar up until that point its also evident cause in the 2nd italo ethiopian war the italians advanced quite easily and quickly through ethiopia on the eastern fronts.

Its seems really obvious but I'll also bring up the fact that there were no rebellions or insurgencies that I know of that happened in galbeed before the 60s. Somalis were actively rebelling against Italians in the south and north yet nothing in supposed Ethiopian controlled galbeed? Sounds fishy.

That figure was governor of Hararghe province not Ogaden proper in 1956 after the British turned over the region, nothing to do with Omar Samatar of Hobyo Sultanate who didn't even live in the same era as him nor did ever join his army.

Didn't Ethiopia have some control of the Shabelle area given that they captured towns as deep as Kelafo? Olol Dinle got the support of the Italians to push them out.

They didn't have control much of anything beyond Harar and some of its environs, it was a conflict between British and Italy. Britain and Italy even competed for control over Zayla, that ended with Zayla being razed to the ground.

Ethiopians would regularly send out armies to make incursion deeper into the Ogaden and get defeated or pushed back in the process.
