Despite Harar falling to Menelik II and the 1897 treaty that ceded half of British Somaliland over to Ethiopia, the Ethiopians practically had no real control over Ogaden/Galbeed until after the end of WW2. Proof?
To begin with, the Ethiopians failed to make any proper gains on western Somalia despite raiding as far as the Juba basin. Somali warriors despite being cut off from firearm trade were defeating and pushing back Ethiopia multiple times.
Perhaps the most significant of these victories however would be the battle of Luuq that saw the Geledi sultanate defeat an army of 15,000 Ethiopians and being left with only 200 afterwards. (Also AUN Factz)
The Dervish leader Muhammad Abdallah Hassan, the scholar Sheikh Hassan Barsame, I could go on, Somalis have repeatedly defeated Ethiopia and prevented them from getting a foothold in Galbeed. It was only then in an attempt to satiate the greed of Menelik, that the British in 1897 "handed" Galbeed over to Ethiopia. However in truth, this was in name only.
The British of course never owned Galbeed so the treaty was a hollow gesture that never did anything.
More proof that Ethiopia's control over Galbeed was nominal is the fact that many of their attempts at taxations failed.
Furthermore, Somalis weren't even aware that Ethiopia technically owned Galbeed lol and it wasn't until 1934 that the Somali-Ethiopia border was demarcated. There was also of course the brief Italian invasion and only AFTER during 1948 Galbeed was properly integrated into Ethiopia which of course meant that Somalis rebelled soon afterwards.
So to put it shortly, Somalis have defeated Ethiopia several times in battle preventing the annexation of Galbeed like what happened in Harar, Oromia and elsewhere. Ethiopian presence never extended past Jigjiga and all attempts at doing so ended in failure. The 1897 treaty meant jack and was more so an attempt to appease Menelik. And lastly, the belief that it was European presence in Somalia that prevented Ethiopia from controlling us is clearly false as I've outlined.
I'm telling you guys, we fought against three colonial powers + Ethiopia and mostly made it out alright subxanallah
